Otherwise the homeowner would have elected to install a keyhole fire pit.:MM:

I like Scott's more than the commercial ones. $500 is a bit steep for a fire pit that you might make from stones found on the property, and maybe the price of a grate. JMO.

It just doesn't seem right to use man made stones when there are so many natural ones that keep pooping up in the lawn and garden! They seem to grow better than my tomatoes.

I use those as a flower garden border. I've mined several hundred from the lot while digging holes to plant things in (like deck footings, fruit trees, etc ...).

Here's the one we recently built up at scout camp. A SUPERSIZED Keyhole Pit.....all built with a little sweat and hard work, no money at all....stones all came from the mountain around the camp.

    It's a big 'un!!

They are all destined to be full blown PYROS when they get older....the fire in those pics we started with a bow drill, that's something we are going to really practice hard this fall/winter with the kids so they can ace the "Klondike Derby" this winter....

Everytime we go up there, we cut at LEAST one standing dead or blowdown up for campfire wood.....they love being in the woods with chainsaws as much as us dads do!

You can be sure that investment in those kids will go forward many times. Too bad so many parents are opting video games and cell phones over family experiences. There is just no substitute.

Thanks, Al! That's probably two of my biggest weaknesses in life......cooking on an open fire in the woods and BACON!!

Scott, they just naturally go together. Bacon is one of my weaknesses also. I think a lot of us have that same affliction. I've made bacon and eggs on the deck over charcoal in a cast iron skillet. It just tastes better outdoors.

Fry up some home fries in the bacon grease. Add a bit of garlic and a little red pepper, oh man. So good!
Another fantastic food over the fire is fresh trout. Just can't top that outdoor cook'en.:)
Oh, by the way, the smiles are still out. I have 14 blue boxes with a frame around them with a question mark in the center. I have 11 smiles that are active.

    Nice pit.
If boy scouts was that cool when I was a kid...I would have joined. You should create the chainsaw and firewood hoarding scout badges. They can earn their badges bucking trees and splitting wood on your property. :tree:
