I'm officially in decent shape. I can see all my wood now and can get at the oak. For a while, all I could get at was really fresh cut softwood. That was brutal. Was very hard to get ample heat out of unseasoned softwood. But now, I can relax a bit and plan out next year's haul. It'll be better than last year. Won't be in this position again where I fear that I won't have enough.

I hear ya. I've been wanting/needing to get at a big pile of tree length ash just 100 feet from the house since December, but the snow is so friggin deep that you can't even walk to the heap. Very unusual winter with the cold and snow - got wood but can't process it. This sucks waiting for some good thaws.

Heh, be thankful for level ground.
    My upcoming scrounge areas are-
Up canyon, over a washed out culvert, on a 20- 35 degree slope, and I have to clear 1/4 mile of trail to get there. Once there I should be good. In June.
500 LF across from A-Basin ski resort. They set off an Avalauncher and took out the whole hill side. Covered the highway, trees and all. I may be able to get to that in July. I won't even touch it unless they have loaders on site, too steep. And so it goes......

Looks ike you guys should be back in the woods cutting soon
Should be good footing & frozen ground with the thaw & now freezing temps coming back.
Good work temps, & no bugs

Gonna be near 40° next week, still freezing at night.
Hope to have that thru March then spring

Probably get 4' of snow , LOL :)
    But that'd be OK too.

My brother and wife live in Pagosa Springs. We went out 4 years ago. He took us all over. Nice.

I know what you're talking about with the steep slopes. Wow. I couldn't get over the roads with 500'-1000' drop offs with no guard rails. Considering how slippery those roads get in the winter… can't be good. My brother says, "Oh yeah, a few folks slide off every year". What do you use for logging equipment in terrain like that?

52F mid afternoon here, melted around 12" throughout the day with the sun beating down. Everything still covered, but the driveway, walkway, and deck are the clearest they've been in at least 2 months, so I'm happy!

We have 2 bare spots in the driveway, albeit, small. At least we can finally see a small piece of Mother Earth! Now for this ice.... Snow melts and causes more ice. I used a lot of sand today to spread on snow so I could move some wood from barn to porch. Will be very happy when spring arrives.

It started Tuesday. It's cold today but the significant melting was Tuesday-Thursday.

We didn't get as much rain as they had predicted. OK with me. The snow pack didn't drop all that much. Today I went snowshoeing down in the woods with my son n law and grandson. Sunny… nice… about 48. The snow pack was dropping about 3" every once in a while as we went along, with a big whoomp. Cool. Plenty of snow left (12"-18", so far) to start planning the March "drop em & haul em" fest. Gotta put the tracks on the Suz and get the saws ready.
I look forward to this time of year, all year… :tree: I plan on having the camera just about glued to my head… or else it didn't happen… ;)

Glad you can get to your wood! The snow has melted off around here but with the snow melting and the rain it's way to wet to get in the woods with destroying the trails.

Hopefully it freezes up for a few weeks before the big thaw.
You'll be able to get a few days of wood gathering in,
    then let Spring happen :)

When the ground is frozen here with no snow,
In the past, I got my old P/U in the woods & go almost anywhere with chains on. :)

Same here, I'm not worried about it...... As much as I would like to cut I'm fine for now and I will get some more in during the summer time. I had a friend of mine tell me he has a huge oak and cherry tree down right now that I can have and his words were you better bring the biggest saw you have and a 36" bar for this oak tree! Time to make the 460 pay for its keep!

    Will a 460 pull a 36" chain? Wow!
