Found this cool curved piece of driftwood on our beach a few weeks ago, thought it would be nice for a bench in my backyard next to my fire pit. I dragged it up with the ford 2000 and it's been sitting since. Also found a nice straight log that I thought would be good for the legs. Finally got a chance to bring it home today. Cut about 8 feet off the end and made the top cut in hopes it would lighten it up a bit. I'm sure it did but it's hardly noticeable, this thing is HEAVY! I'd guess around 300 plus and I have been moving it around all day solo, I'm shot. The hard part of the project was getting the notches for the posts cut level, they're pretty far off!!' Dug the holes 18" down and back filled with some gravel and dirt. Hoisted that beast up there as put 4 10" timberlok screws through the top of each post. There was way way more messing around than this simple explanation and it took 3 times as long as I thought it would. Still have to run the belt sander or power planer over the top and then throw some weather protection on it. The top log is oak, that I'm sure of. The posts I have no idea. I'm gonna post a picture asking for ID in the wood pile forum if anyone wants to take a guess. I'll update when I'm totally finished.
You see driftwood and you see a cool project. I wish I had your imagination - I would have just seen another piece of wood I gotta haul off to the dump. Good job!
For all the labor and time I have into it I'm gonna say 1200 installed. Once I streamlined the process and got everything looking 100% that could go down a bit I'm sure but that's what I would guess right now, especially in my area. It's not done yet, much more detail work to do.
Got a little Bit done today. Flattened out the top and rounded some edges. Still have to dress up the posts where they attach to the bench, looks sloppy to me right now seeing I couldn't get them to sit flat. Decided to cut the end off, it was cut too thin there and I didn't need it cracking when someone sat on it. There's a little punky wood in it but hopefully once I seal it that will prolong the life a bit. Just have to figure out what I'm gonna seal it with. I think I'll have a beer on it tonight even though it's not finished. quick one though, two game sevens on tonight.
