And a lot cheaper too! With chickens ya got what, a heat lamp, a lil feed, and maybe a coop.
With horses its gotta buy or rent some land, gotta put up a fence, build or rent a barn, buy or raise A LOT of feed, scoop A lOT of poop (gotta buy a loader and a manure spreader then) gotta buy a trailer, then the truck to pull the trailer, then you can take 'em to the vet. :makeitrain"When you get home you gotta buy all the tack to ride the dang money pits. After you have everything, then its time to start upgrading to bigger/better stuff...don't own a horse, never gonna, but I know a few people that have saddled themselves with those money pits! :picard:
Congrats on those CHEAP chickens! ;)

Well, you can, just a lot of our society tends to frown on it.

We own two of them. No trailering. That was the deal. Don't need to take them elsewhere with 81 acres here. We already owned the land, well, with the bank!  All of what you said about cost is true. But the enjoyment the family gets out of them is worth it. I was just watching my wife and daughters riding them the other day and thought about how cool that was. Fortunate to be able to enjoy something like that.

I saw all of the work you did on the barn and the fences, you're a great father and husband. I hope your family appreciates all that you have done. Keep the kids busy and they stay out of trouble!

With all that land and that big new barn, it is only natural to have a few chickens around. I had some for a while. Lots of nice eggs. But I got carried away and got too many, spoiled it all and the wife just got angry with me when I tried to feed her some of the meat birds I raised. If I learned anything, it would be to have them only for egg production. Those eggs were the best eggs ever. Two of my kids have chickens. They really enjoy the experience and eggs.

That's where you need to have agreement before hand, with on whether they are layers or meat birds or just pets.

That is the problem. Most of the time, when I just do what I have in mind, I get along OK without the heckling. When I ask, I get the "no" . Seems better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Spent a good plenty of time on/with/tending horses etc. Ah yes. Fond memories. Did a Hi Ho Silver. Inside a barn with a low exit door. Needless to say we shot out that door at full speed. With me laying horizontal. To clear the header. Joy..... One of many FUN horse riding stories I have. Most horses owned by my family/friends are what I call "lookin at horses". Never do anything with them but feed em and look at em.:picard:
