I held a new echo last week. I was impressed at how light it was compared to my stihl. That's all I'm good for.

So far I have been impressed with my Echo gas trimmer. It took me from this

If you prefer, here is another view of the same trimming effort.

A Stihl FS130 or KM130 is what you are lookin for.

I hear a lot of great things about the trimmers that use battery packs.

I've got a ryobi gas trimmer, it seems to go ok, but the choke needs to be on for it to run. I'm sure it needs an adjustment. It's got a walbro carb on it. The nice thing is that it uses the expand-it system, so you can swap implements from the trimming head.

An old Ryobi 31cc powerhead is worth fixing. I have 3 - one is a dedicated tiller. They just run and run. All they've needed is fuel lines, bulb and carb rebuild (or nowadays...so many cheap carbs on ebay - just replace carb.)

If buying a Stihl, the FS94 would be my current pick. I don't know what's good on Husqvarnas side these days and I've lost track of Echo too other than to notice that they remain popular.

    Is the FS94 shaft driven?

No, unfortunately. They will run a "grass" blade just fine but hacking through woody stuff is a no-no.

They need to do a solid shaft version and retire the FS90R.

Spent some quality time with my Husqvarna 223L yesterday. Great trimmers, but not recommended for brush cutter duty. The weight is the beauty of the 223L...and the price. I use an old Echo SRM-2601 for brush cutting. I think 25cc is the size you want (or bigger) for running a blade efficiently? Have heard lots of good about RedMax trimmers. In the circles I run, Echo has always been considered "King of the Trimmers". I doubt you can go wrong with any of the mainstay manufacturers. I had someone give me a really good opinion of the Honda units last year..."best trimmer I've ever used!" but we didn't really discuss which others he'd ran.

I am not a fan of the units with different attachments (husky anyways).

The more the better. I like mine cause the handle that's on it and it's light weight.

At work, my groundskeeping staff run Stihl KM131R and KM111R Kombi System heads and attachments, but that's probably too rich for the average DIY'er. I have always had good luck personally with ECHO units, but if I were to buy a new unit I would go with Stihl. The engines seem to be less sensitive to fuel and temperature issues, and seem to start and stay running much easier.

are we talking string timmer or for brush blades or like a pole saw?

I have an older Echo that goes and goes. Just put a cheap ebay carb on it last summer and it runs better than it ever did since I have had it. and the good thing is that its fully adjustable where the old one wasent.

'Nother vote for the echo srm 225 here. Been a good unit. Struck me as just as well built as the stihls but for less money.

I am a bit of a trimmer freak-I have my old Stihl FS-85, a Stihl FS-250, and a KM-130 Kombi unit. I'll second the recommendation for a FS-94. It's the modern version of my FS-85, a lightweight 2 stoke unit. I have had 14 years of trouble free performance from mine.
Not real impressed on how my 4-mix 130 unit starts.
