I have 2 trees that need to go and the first one is a possible threat to my shed and back fence. I recently posted a tree ID thread and think that I may have some kind of elm to deal with. Here it is as seen from in front of my shed.
You can see that there are a lot of branches more or less leaning toward the fence where I have put a couple of 2x6s to help shield the fence top from any falling debris. Once I had managed to get those 2x6 boards in place I knew I had solid support from the bush under them. It was all I could do to get them there by sliding them along. My intent is to tie a couple of those leaning branches to the main stem and then clip them loose. After that I should be able to lower them with little damage. When seen in person I think I can readily reach a couple of them while standing on the shed roof. If that doesn't play out I will use a pole saw since they are only 4 or 5 inches in diameter.
Also visible in the picture is a small diameter branch that has broken off and is hanging near the top. It is not close enough to the branches I intend to cut to present a problem to me while cutting. Here that same tree is as viewed along the back side of my shed. You can probably tell why I think it is a problem tree.

Unfortunately, even with those branches gone it will want to fall toward the shed if I take it down in one piece. One thought is to cut the branch that is about 4 feet from the ground after tying it to the large dead branch area on the more or less vertical part. If I get away with that, the tree will want to fall away from the shed and I should be able to guide it to miss the utility boxes.
My target tree is in the background of this pic while the cherry is in the foreground. I also have a very large mulberry nearby that I can use to keep it away from the utility boxes you can see in the foreground. You can barely see a part of the mulberry's trunk on the right side of the picture and behind the cherry. It has some very large diameter branches that reach most of the way to the cherry. If I can get that elm to fall on the side of the cherry away from those boxes they will be well protected by the cherry tree's trunk but I need to unload enough weight to make it want to fall that way.

Once I have that elm on the ground it will be time to just fall the cherry before it tears that phone terminal box out of the ground. The cherry is already leaned away from all of the nearby hazards and will fall into an open parklike area. (I live on the edge of a designated green strip here in the village.) You can see it in the background of that first picture.

Probably time to call a professional at this point. Your home owners insurance would be leery...

Wow. I'm glad that is one I don't have to deal with. And that small branch at the top of the tree is still something you have to be concerned with.

Not at all what I wanted to hear but that is why I asked about it. Now, if I can only figure out who it was that took out my 30 inch diameter ash that was a major hazard to my house and my neighbor's garage. He was easy to work with and not too outrageous on price.

Well I got lucky. I found the guy who did my last tree removal by a simple process. I was busy reviewing all the ratings/reviews and such of local tree services when I found the review that I wrote back in 2011. I called his business number and expect to hear back soon to get an estimate.
I have to agree with @MagCraft and BS. It probably is better that I just spend a few hundred bucks and not worry about it.

When it comes to felling a tree that could do some serious property damage and felling a tree out in the woods two different things.

Im glad it worked out, never want to get off on the wrong foot at all I just saw how long the post was and I didn't have to scroll down to the other pictures to arrive at that point. Nobody wants to harm their house or anything but there's a certain point where even the most seasoned of all of us feel a bit concerned and having written this much I would have hoped it had crossed your mind. Im not doubting your abilities nobody is but situations like this just call for a bit of help. :salute::thumbs:

I have a really hard time judging these things from photos, I guess. I think I would tackle this one based on what I see. But the other guys certainly know better than me, by far. Glad you found someone reasonable and that you trust.

Greg, you are not alone. It can really be difficult judging things from photos. Even trying to ID some trees is extremely difficult. Shoot, even in the woods I tend to want to see the whole tree before saying what it is and on the forum we sometimes see only a 16" log and that makes it really hard. As for felling, it is worse because it is difficult to see the whole picture and before felling, that is a must!

Well my tree guy showed up today and he shot me a price of $375 to put it on the ground and haul off the small diameter stuff. He can get fairly close when the ground is dry by driving across that green space grass so hauling the small stuff will be fairly easy for him to do with his trailer. I think we have a winner.

I'd contact the phone or power company about the trees disturbing the box. They should remove them, stump and all since its damaging their property. A friend of ours handles those types of problems for Cincinnati Bell.

The tree I was concerned about dropping is not encroaching on the power or phone or cable boxes but it is threatening my shed. The one near the phone box is an easy peasy fall since it is already leaning where I want it to land. Just place a face cut then bore cut to set up the hinge with no threat of a barber chair and cut the back strap to release the tree. If I call the utilities and wait a month they may or may not show up at all. The cable company installed their cable for my internet connection about 2 years back and the cable they promised to bury is still laying on the surface from their box to the back of my house about 70 feet away across the lawn and running through my back garden gate.

Well the tree guy showed up today and that tree is little more than a memory, a short stump and about a dozen rounds that I will be splitting. I had to noodle the last round at the stump because it was too big for me to handle. The reddish colored elm wood sure is pretty. The stump is bleeding like crazy.

I gotta love this tree guy. I worked with him, handing him tools and such, and he dropped his price to do the work for me. He was done and cleaning up by 1300 local time after having used a full day as his estimate for the quote he gave me. Next time I need professional help, he will get the call. That may be why he does this. Seems to me last time he did a job for me he ended up beating his own price.

Not a bit but I don't have any and it is about to rain. By tomorrow it could just be rain water. It looks about the same as a heavy rain on the stump on a dry day.
