It's been a long while since we had a good warm day due to one of the harshest winters in recent memory. When it warmed up my roof turned into a landslide of Ice and almost hit me and my steel shed. It did hit the ash bin and smashed the top down good while scaring the pizz out of me at the same time. It took 15 minutes to dig out and open the dang ash can. This was mostly remnant from the big ice storm then the warm weather after the storm that melted then froze everything solid again and snowed on top of that. I got buried in snow and had to dig out which is no fun. Me thinks the ash can is moving...o_O

Did the same thing, from below though. About a 3 inch thich by 20ft by 15 ft section of roof had an ice sheet. Took advantage of the warmer temps, and started hacking with a shovel the few inched hanging off the roof. Well, huge sheets started coming down, I dove and lived. Glad we are both ok!

Yep, that is happening all over. We had a monster ice jam, and the entire gutter come off the back of a building downtown today and narrowly missed an individual taking the garbage to the alley. Thank God, because it smashed the hell out of everything else in its path. Sorry, no pics, I forgot to take any.....should have.

I think the ice got under the lip of the roof because it's raised in one spot. It was almost like a faucet running as soon as the sun hit it. I'm gonna have to redo the roof anyhow it's very old section on the mud room.

    Insulation helps too.
    Stays cold.
If you get icicles on your eves, it's a sign of not enough attic insulation .

Ice/Water shield under the metal, 5' or so up from the eve helps too .

My wood shed is leaking. low pitch roof and ice dams. Truly I really prefer the cold. This thawing thing needs to get over with.

Right on Steve. Our mud room is insulated under the metal but when the Ice comes it sticks to everything! Then it warms up and if there is even a small section for the sun to reach on the metal area it warms up and slides off. Usually it is in very small pieces but the sheer mass of Ice we had earlier this winter was just to much I think. I've never seen that thick of Ice on the roof ever....

Me either, snow too. I had 3 foot drifts on the south side of my roof all winter, melting now. I checked the attic several times, worried about the snow load. Building codes require a roof snow load factor for your area, but that doesn't cover the extremes and this winter we had extremes! As an inspector, when people gripe about having to meet codes, my response is, "well, if you are smart, you will exceed the codes, they are the minimum". And that goes for wood burning too. Both my stove exceed requirements everywhere except through the ceiling and there I could only buy the standard 2 in clearance from combustible ceiling support box. If they offered something more, I would have gladly paid more. I even considered making my own with more clearance, but decided UL testing was probably good enough. That said, that is my weak link and I check it regularly when I screw up and let the flue temp get a little out of control.:rofl:

Week from hell here! Monday nite my wife woke me up hollering, come to find out a water pipe had burst in the upstairs bathroom above the kitchen that was just remodeled about 2 years ago. Water was dumping(not trickling) out of one off the recessed light fixture!:(

Today at work we lost a 12x42 lean to on one of the pole barns! Spent all day shoveling snow of off the roofs of the rest of the buildings!

Hear ya, my friend. I was out chopping ice dams ( or is it ice-damms!!!) off of the backside of the house for almost 2 hours today. My ash can was safe, but I was worried about my pooches, as they spend a fair amount of time back there.

I came home to a large puddle in the drive at the drain.....the line under the drive was frozen. Took about 90 minutes to get it opened up.

Art I wasn't chopping I haven't been feeling so good this week ( the flu ) so I ended up coming home early today and discovered I needed to dump ash. Well apparently the house wanted to kill me too! All I heard was abloooghbmnkjom and then my brain said ? O I am under snow ! Then ? I really almost peed myself with panic until I realized my hand was free still so I dug out.
