So I've been driving past this cut down (what was left of these 2 trees for over a year now. And I could see some pieces that were cut into perfect rounds. So I finally emailed the property ( this is a nursery) to get permission to take the wood. They gave me thumbs up to take what I wanted. So this morning on the way into work some OT, I finally had the chance to stop and grab what I could in 15 minutes. Let me say these suckers were HEAVY. Of course they have been sitting in a ditch for about 8 months.
It kind of looks like the Honey Locus I cut. Give the split a sniff. Does it have a slight sweet smell? Whatever it is, looks like a nice haul.
How'd you lift them? With all back? When I have heavy rounds to lift, I put one right behind my tailgate so I can use it as a landing to rest a heavy round on thus getting the heavy in the truck using two lifts. If the rounds are the right size, one can almost roll the round (like rolling a box) thus reducing the overall effort and potential for injury.
I used a log tong and a couple were around 80 lbs so I just carried them. I may be 40 but I still have some life left in my back, lol. And Marshel54 it did have a slight sweet smell.
Okay. When I think of heavy rounds, I'm thinking more in the 200lbs+ range. 30k for back surgery and I'm a little more careful than I used to be. Now I'm going to have to bring a scale with me for scrounging so I know exact weights!!
Ya. Not worth trying to muscle the big stuff and possible injury. Bring a maul or wedge and sledge and bring it down to size.
To bad I don't have any leaves. But what was left of this tree was cut down about 8 months ago and just left there.
Just stumbled across this.. Timber and Lumber Calculators at WOODWEB I cut all my wood to 18" so I used one foot for the length then multiply by 1.5. Looks like a 20" diameter round of Red Oak at 18" long weighs in right at 200lbs. That's some good looking firewood and all you had to do was ask.
Mental note to self.....load largest rounds first to avoid lifting them higher than necessary! I'm hoping you just stacked them that way on your tailgate for the pics!!! Nice.
My back is a mess, 3 separate issues in it. Whenever I have heavy rounds I at least pop em in half, might even quarter them if theyre too big.
Yup! Years ago, I started taking the maul into the woods whenever making a wood run for that very same reason.
