Picked on an ad again leading me out to an island called Raft for some Western Red Cedar. Holy moly. I know why I love the smell, downright intoxicating. Splits like a dream!!!!I'm also noticing that when I drove out, this would make an amazing GTG place! Blowdown central! There's enough trees in this area to get everyone cutting, splitting and stacking. Entire area needed a clean up and with 30 people here with your toys haha, the community would ask us to come back. Anyways a fun outing and I have my allotment for kindling and tinder.
I would be thinking about some wood working projects if I had access to that much cedar. Cedar has so many qualities.
Rounds about 4 feet in diameter.... you figure out logistics...its amazing to work with, people make beautiful pieces. But Im too small time, hopefully someone else can. But fully agree.
Oh yeah. Thats why this stuff isn't going to be the main wood, just starter and accelerant... I've got plenty of starter for now. This just picks up the slack.
I have Atlantic White Cedar out back, I have burned it, but I mostly use 5" logs for fence posts, it lasts for years. BTW, our Cedar isn't no where near as big as yours. Good score! As far as the GTG, if leave right now, I should get there by June.

I figured If a GTG would be arranged you could have something for seeing the WEST side of things. But my little 8,800 square feet plot isn't enough for trailers and whatnot but tents be ok!
East of the cascades in oregon we have a cousin to the red and white cedars called juniper its a pretty good firewood more btu than pine or fir. It gets used as fenceposts alot also.
I'm not finished here I know and the stack is a bit irregular because my logs aren't evenly cut(not my doing but im not complaining. Just makes my pile a little off center. Doesn't make too much difference with cedar. This entire side of the house gets so much exposure to sun in the summertime, it hits it first thing in the morning. So I am aiming to have most of the wood over here anyways since its away from the house and I seem to be prone to black mold even in open areas.
Ya its juniper its a pita to cut because they suck up alot of dirt, and some are really bushy but the junipers that grow above like 3500 elevation get alot taller more like a true cedar. The ones that are solid( no hollow spot in middle) are coveted by some who make furniture.
Holy smokes. Im just used to seeing little bushes like branches not much bigger than my wrist around. It was definitely hard to just cut the branch overhang in my yard. Smells terrific though.
I will take some pics of some larger junipers when the mud and snow recede enough to get to them. I plan on cutting about 2 cords of it for next winter.
I wish there was some red cedar closer to me i love the smell of it, and its great wood for starting fires or burning on days where its 45 or 50 outside.
man if there was a way to trade, you bet I would. Heh if firewood was safe to transfer and travel with then we wouldn't have issues and all that. Lots of wood for everyone.
I knew it was Juniper in truck when I saw it. I've burnt a fair amount, in fact this year I did. I have no idea if it's the same as yours.
Well, I like to get wood for free, it's tough around here because so many people that want wood here are chasing it as well. I am very proud of NH, " The Free or Die" state, and New England in general and, can I say one word. Tom Brady, and he isn't done. Sam Adams and steamers, lobster rolls, and fried clams & Old Orchard Beach. That's what I'm all about. And may I add, Fenway Park.
