Hopefully not we'll find out Monday. She is doing better, but at the same time taking it easy. No matter what it is, we will get it taken care of.

I'd like to change dog foods, their normal stuff is out of stock everywhere and its expensive anyway. Anyone know modern Dog food cliff notes? Things have changed since so long ago when I was in the loop in the late 80's (when Avoderm and California Natural were new and all the rage).

Blackie eats the fur of his paws and lower back legs on cheap food (vet said it was a food allergy). Blondie has had recurring (chronic?) ear yeast infections her whole life (vet said food allergies can encourage that and increase the inflammation in her ears too).

Google showed with me that "grain free" is not the best answer, that other ingredients are more likely the culprit. Yesterday I was given some samples at the feed store of a "hydrolyzed" protein food.

For better or worse I ordered a supplement I have been hearing on AM radio, Dinovite. No kidding, its helping blondies ears!! (but it sent Blackie off the charts leg nibbling so he does not get it anymore and his legs look better. Not perfect, he still nibbles, but MUCH better). So I am leaning towards food problems with both of them.

OMG I have had 7 dogs over the years, these two dogs and these newer foods are the first diet problems I have ever seen. Maybe I was lucky with my first 4 dogs, or could it be all the different stuff in dog food now days are causing problems?

WWW is buying dog food tomorrow, I am tempted to ask for old fashioned purina dog chow for comparison, what do you think? Guess I am out of touch, I am SHOCKED to see 30lb bags of dog food selling for $70 bucks. Is this outrageous or is it just me?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I wonder if some evil genius at ARB sponsored this program.

Send the Kangaroos, then sell them Roo bars.

Go for it on just regular dog food. My Rita has allergies and gets all kinds of black eye gunk. I tried all the fancy no grain, organic stuff but I found that Friskies and Science Diet work best to keep her eyes clear.

The choices in dog food are certainly not what they used to be. Sorting out allergy problems with specific dogs can be a challenge. I hope you are able to figure it out for your pups.

I feed a dry kibble and switched from Purina Dog Chow to a more "premium" food a number of years ago, and did a little research at the time and here's my take on what is available. I don't pretend to be an expert.

The lower cost "store" brands are basically made as cheaply as possible. The ingredients can be sourced from anywhere and can include ingredients of suspect quality. The "nutritional" value for the dog is very low, based mostly on calories. Batch to batch quality is likely not monitored.

One step up is the lower cost "name brands". More attention is paid to the ingredients and the nutritional value for the dog, but the emphasis is still on cost. The protein in the food is likely to be plant based or very little from animal sources. The quality of the ingredients is likely just OK.

Next would be the "premium" foods. They likely all do a pretty good job of the overall nutritional value for the dog. Much more attention is paid to the source of the ingredients, you will hear about "human grade" food ingredients a lot, the quality of the ingredients is likely very good. Much more attention is paid to monitoring the batch to batch quality and potential contamination. The protein in the food is likely still plant based, but with much more of the total protein coming from animal sources. You will also see a lot more variety in formulations. The emphasis on cost is still there.

"Super premium" will get you a food with the protein entirely, or very nearly so, coming from animals. The ingredients are likely very high quality and highly monitored. Not so much emphasis on cost.

I landed at the "premium" level, for several reasons.

    • High quality "human grade" ingredients and batch to batch monitoring are important to me.
    • While I can appreciate that a dog's evolutionary diet is animal meat based, biologically it doesn't make a whole lot of difference where the protein comes from, not taking into account allergy concerns. The food is "correct" nutritionally, and at least some of the protein is animal.
    • I think it is important to feed a variety, I keep as many as 7 different formulations on hand. Imagine having to eat the same food every day.
I was lucky enough to find a brand offered at a local pet store that is a relatively small family owned business. They do not sell nationally, they only offer their products through small independentally owned "local" pet stores. I pay $44-54/30 lb bag and get a "free" bag after buying 10.

I found this site helpful when researching ingredients.

4Heatlh at TS has a 30 lb bag of no grain for $37. You can get a variety of meats in them. Salmon is one that usually has low allergy issues.

DaveGunter thank you for explanation, that is exactly what I was hoping for! Back in the day I was taught and we preached to clients to switch foods gradually, prevents gas etc. When you said you feed different formulations is that like different flavors of the same brand? Or is switching foods cold turkey ok now?

savemoney , WOW, that looks like great food, now how did you know what my fur babies needed? :) I dont have a TSC here but they are shipping dog food. Delivery and a new decent food is a double win for me!!!!! Going to try the Salmon for $37. If needed, looks like they also have a "super premium" Salmon that uses the hydrolyzed protein, only $44. (I currently pay $55 for 26lbs).

I have been surfing on and off for a week or so, went to the feed store and talked to the gal there, I left empty handed (some samples) and more confused than before. You guys are the best :handshake:

I have a TS store nearby, but last time I went on line, they didn't charge a delivery fee so I just ordered a lot ahead of time. It is delivered to my door, way better for me not to have to lift it so many times. will711 has his dog on this diet. He speaks well of it.

Ever figured out what a lot of ground beef is made out of? or Hot dogs / bologna? Those are "human grade" foods. Not saying that other foods are better/worse, just saying that "human grade" may not mean much.

Different formulations of the same brand, a lot like the different 4Health varieties from TSC that savemoney mentioned, which looks like pretty good food, Dogfoodadvisor.com gave it pretty a favorable review. I have heard a few people say their dogs had itchy skin or hot spots that they were able to eliminate by not feeding a food with chicken.
