30" solid post oak, little over 11' to that big branch. A guy is coming to buy a walnut log I'm selling and he said he's interested in this oak and wanted to know my price. Thing is...I have no idea. Anybody care to give me a ballpark estimate? I realize it's not a perfect tree by any stretch and that what's worth $100 to one guy is worth nothing to another. I do know it's worth at least a couple ricks of firewood, which is exactly what I used the first 10' for. Thanks.
It may not be ideal for lumber with the large knots on one side and the cracked center on the log. When you get an offer, keep in mind the firewood value. I am guessing you will be burning that.
Thanks for the reply. The crack in the center is mainly just a really bad uneven cut. I think a few inches in it may not be there. My little 18" bar was having a heck of a time chewing through it straight haha
465 bdft? Roughly. That's probably a pulp grade log. Pallet grade at best. Oak is about $100 per one thousand board foot right now depending on area for a pulp-pallet log delivered to the Mills. So the log is about $45-50 as a generous value. If you can do better great, maybe since he is already coming it could be worth time and gas to buy it for more. I personally wouldn't even bother sawing that log.
Luckily, he's a furniture builder and likes wood with character (knots). We haven't agreed on a price yet, but it's gonna be well over the firewood value (roughly 2 rick - $100ish). I don't have any intentions of selling anything to the mill.
I wouldnt know what to price it at but i do know that all the money in wood is in the processing. Sawing, planing, ripping to size. Good luck! Hope you get some money out of it!
