Chain Grinder Video

    Hey guys, going to do a segment on sharpening chains using an electric grinder. Any advice, tips to pass on. Anything I need to make sure to get on film?

    Set it and forget it! :rofl: :lol: Just kidding... This is probably the best video I have found Adam. Personally I clean the chains in simple green then setup the grinder and sharpen them. You need to be very careful to not take too much off or you will burn the cutters not a good thing! It weakens the metal and makes the teeth to brittle so the don't hold an edge well and will break. Then I mark the smallest tooth and start there setting it for the smallest amount of tooth I can remove in order to sharpen. This is important because if you take too much off you use your chains up fast. Once your set your off for the races and you go around one side of the chain then turn the chain holder and do the other side. Once that's done I file one raker to the height needed then from there you set the wheel on the grinder and file the rakers down from there. After words I just dunk the chains in wd40 and use them.

    Pete, what is simple green? We haven't done anything with that or wd40. Can you elaborate on both of these topics?

    http://simplegreen.com it's a biodegradable cleaner that literally eats the dirt and crap off the chains if you soak them for a little bit it isn't really necessary if your only cutting hard woods but I do a lot of pine and it gums the chains up bad. I use the Home Depot HDX $1 bottle version and it works just as well. WD40 is so I can re oil the chains on the cheap so the links get lubber up before I put it back on the saw plus it keeps them from rusting.

    I don't cut pine, not even if it's in the way. Old lady has allergic asthma and any of the conifers other than cedar seem to set her off. Any reason I couldn't use bar oil instead of wd-40?

    You can also use canola oil it's a little cheaper too.

    Yeah, but I have a gallon of bar oil, don't have a gallon of the other stuff. Only fats we use in this house are butter, olive oil, and our home rendered lards and tallows.
