My neighbor of 38 years that I barely knew ( his house is on the next road over and we're separated by hills and hollars and about a half mile as the crow flies) sold his property to a big timber/sawmill guy a few months back. I decided to look around tonight in preparation for mushroom season. I found a very nice red oak blowover and 2 pignut hickorys down that are somewhat deteriorated but usable about 100 ' from my property line. I'll wait until fall and call the owner and see if I can get permission to cut and remove the downers.
Likely of no use to him so well worth asking. Good luck. You never know, if he's a big timber/sawmill guy, he may be some other wood in your future. Ones man's debris pile is another man's hoard
#1, ground too wet #2 after it dries, too hot, #3 nobody can get to it without a skidder/dozer but me #4 it's not laying on the ground. At 68 y/o I only cut fall, winter and spring.
I hear you bang about it being to hot. I hate working in the woods in the summer. Last summer a friend cleared 1/2 an acre of Oak to put a pool in and said I could take all I want. He had cut it into 4' lengths, and 16" rounds. All I had to do was drive back to the woods and load it. Temps in the 80's with humidity, the sweat kept running down my glasses, driving me nuts. But I got two full truckloads ASAP, cause I knew another friend was coming to get some too. He would have sent me pics of all the wood in his yard. I left a couple of loads for him, but he wasn't gonna get it all.
Wood cutting is one of my seasonal hobbies and I have chainsaw ocd Sometimes I get my son or a neighbor to help if I get something too big to handle by myself but I enjoy being in the woods working alone at my pace. I have enough hardwood down on my own property but I love the oaks and hickorys. Hardwoods that are down and not touching the ground are $ in the bank so I don't get in a hurry. I have been burning wood for 37 years (with a couple breaks) and I have never had to leave my property for wood.
I'm with Eric VW on this one---ask as soon as possible, remove at your leisure--perhaps make a new friend along the way---the worst he can say is NO! (well that's in one word) I just stopped at a guy's house to see if I could help him with his wood and he answered the door in his jammy bottoms and said "sure"---but it has to stop raining first....(go ahead I know it's coming...)
bang this sounds as if it could turn out to be in your favor! If you can get on his good side you could really be blessed. Make sure you bless him too!
I have done some business with the new owner over the years but don't really know him. I'm fairly certain he won't be accessible and I'll have to talk to one of his underlings as he is in the top 5 wealthiest people in my county. My plan is to wait until I'm ready so their memory will be fresh if an issue arises. My guess is the only way they say no is because of a liability concerns but I'll sign a release if required. It's not a real big deal if it doesn't happen as I have 3 nice hard maples down closer to the house and others up the hills but I love the oak and hickory.
That's crazy talk...people at the top enjoy the lesser masses as they most times like to think of themselves as one of us---while it may make you uncomfortable consider it your community service project....
Crazy talk??? easy for you to say from a few hundred miles away. Did you miss the part where I mentioned doing business with him in the past? I have had enough individual dealings with his sawmill and logging business and also had to buy and sell to his companies as a representative of the company that I retired from, I know how he interacts with people/customers. Sorry for the rant but saying my statements are crazy talk is unjustified and rude!
I never meant to be "rude" yikes! It's just been my experience that most people are approachable---but I'm a woman--I also have a high tolerance level and I'm very forgiving----hey it's only a couple trees....
Keep your positive attitude about people and it will serve you well, categorizing someones statement as "crazy talk" probably won't serve you as well.
I will keep that very much in mind as I go about my day---working in a lumber yard has toughened me up and I assume everyone has thicker skin than me...a thousand pardons....
I spent a career in trucking and mining and later in life managing truckers, mechanics, etc. Believe me I had to develop a thick skin and at the same time not allow anyone to demean me. I'm done.
scavenger , now how about the half nekkid man you asked for his wood? Lol Eric VW would've asked the same question.
Just curious - and prob wrong thread - but what type of mushrooms? And sorry to get off topic. Prob wrong thread and know mushrooms are tasty but also deadly - figured there would be more about them with all the woodsman(women) here. ??
