Hello friends, due to circumstances in my changing health I have decided to sell some of my firewood equipment to payoff some bills to prepare for my way too early retirement. Unfortunately I have decided along with my doctors that I need to stop working and focus on my health. I had the fight of my life last winter and have recovered somewhat but I have some debilitating side affects from surgery and treatments that are going to require future surgeries and ongoing treatments. I will be going back to Dana-Farber which is downtown Boston and anyone that knows Boston, it's a very long day when I need to go back and forth for visits. But they have the best doctors and resources in the country. With all that being said, my days of processing firewood are probably behind me and I would like to sell my splitter and saw and I would like to know what you guys would pay for these items before I put them up for sale. I will probably wait until spring to do so but I'd like to get things planned in advance. First is my DR Power 28 Ton Splitter currently selling for $1600. New This is a little over 2 years old. Second is my Stihl MS391 currently selling for $589. 20" Bar New A little over 2 years old.
Sorry to hear about your health. I hope that it all works out and you will be in everyone's hopes and prayers. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
Thank you Stephiedoll I appreciate that! I'm still going to be a wood burner I just won't be CSSing my own anymore. Luckily I'm ahead on my wood and I have a great husband and wife team that supply my firewood. I might be down and out right now but I'm a lucky man for what I have.
Sorry to hear about your health, taking care of that is more important than having equipment. Looks like your saw and splitter are both in excellent condition. The splitters tend to hold value so I would say you can discount it a little for being used but still get pretty good money out of it. Same with the saw, knock a little money off and it should sell.
An eBay search turned up one used MS391 that recently sold for $555 plus shipping, but that's an outlier. EBay and Paypal scoop off about 13%, so the very top end of the market seems to be around $480. Selling locally your market will be a lot smaller, so I'd guess around $400 unless you get lucky.
A 391 in great shape like yours just sold on my local CL for $300 in about an hour. It was gone before I could get it! If your runs as good as it looks I would think $450-$500 would be reasonable. Retail you also have to add tax so that would put it at around $625 out the door.
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Splitter and saw are in great shape. I picked up a mint 391 a couple years ago and sold it fast for $425. I'd probably try for 80% of the splitter price for first try - 1200-1300 and see what happens. Buyers will normally offer less when they show up. You can always lower the price if it doesn't sell. You might as well post them on the classifieds here! I pay a higher price for equipment that looks new new when I know the owner.....but if it is a stranger, I try for a lower price. You just never know what the person might have done to the equipment. Used is used. Do you know of anyone who heats with wood and might be interested? Perhaps they can get a good deal on the equipment and you get a sale - win/win. Cheers!
Glad you're on the mend - and keep up the fight. Used splitters seem to go quick if you price them slightly under what a comp model at a box store in your area is selling for - and yours looks in very-good to new condition. The saw is a different animal - all Stihls fetch(or at least owners think they do) top dollar. I'd angle a package deal local on c-list or Uncle Henry's (if they serve your area) and list them for $1200-1300 & $450 or package $1600 there may be some future wood hoarder looking for a steal with their tax return so I wouldn't wait until spring to list them
My prayers are with you my friend. I am very aware what it is like to go through difficult health issues. My situation was regarding my son. His struggles have been from birth, he is now 25 years old. Definitely a difficult road but it does make you know what is important in life. I'm sorry that you are forced to give up a great outlet for the stress. Being out in the timber gives me the outlet that I need. Friends and family are the real "NEED". I wish you the best luck getting top dollar for your equipment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Rule if thumb: "Never be afraid to ask too much or offer too little." I pray all works out well for you and you have no need to sell your gear.
I agree with what the others have said $450ish on the saw and $1,200-1,300 on the splitter. You can always start out high on your price and come down. Sorry to hear about your health. I'll pray for you.
God's speed in your recovery dylskee! Between your doctor(s), your family, and your spirit (sometimes you are your own best doctor), you WILL be gooder! Nothing wrong with stopping the heavier work and doing the lighter stuff. Keep moving. Even if only light duty stuff.
Well, the inevitable day has come. I officially had to leave my job of 27 years yesterday. I have very mixed feelings to say the least; I feel a weight lifted off of my shoulders because I don't have to work 12 hour days in the shop. On the other hand I feel completely lost because I don't have to work 12 hour days in the shop! Being a machinist was something I enjoyed, and was good at. The time has come to get myself healthy and strong and this was the right decision for me. It was the hardest decision I had to make but I'm out of options. Onward and upward from here, no place to go but up! This might seem very cliche but, don't take one minute of your life for granted because nothing is a guarantee and life is a gift.
