Have been looking at a MS660 Mag with 36" bar. Owner says approx 5-10 tanks of fuel through it. The saw looks brand new. Priced at $1,000. I've been looking online and see them priced from $650-$1000 and hate to think I'm paying top price for it. Would like to hear your thoughts on this deal. Thanks
On a used saw I would not pay top dollar. Just like a new car as soon as it comes off the shelf the price drops.
I wouldn't buy it, but that's not a fair indicator because I prefer cheap saws that need work unless I'm getting an exceptionally good deal on a newer unit, which is unusual. What is driving this potential purchase? Would you expect to use a big, heavy saw frequently, or just once in a while? Keep in mind that it's now possible to build an entire 660 from Chinese aftermarket parts, for a fraction of the price of the genuine article. I've seen at least one of these knockoffs advertised on CL as if it was the real thing. Does the one you're looking at have the Stihl logo cast into the starter and clutch covers? Are all the standard stickers present on the gas tank / rear handle? From what I've read the fakes can be pretty good saws, but they aren't worth anywhere near $1k.
I think that if you find one in the $600 to $700 range that would definitely be better. I'd probably pay that if it was a decent saw that wasn't totally beat and didn't have Chinese knock off parts on it. Good luck in your quest! I hope you find a good one for a good price!
Cool. Thanks for replies. I don't expect to use it as primary saw. I just wanted to have a larger saw that would handle a longer bar for bigger trees when needed. I will check the Stihl stamping into the starter and clutch cover just to see. Again I appreciate the advice - I'm far from a pro at this sort of thing so all of it helps.
You can get a brand new 661 with 2 year warrentee for $1200. I would say $1000 is pretty high. I would go $850 tops.
Yup! 1000 clams is too much. Dealer where im at wants 1250 for a new 661 with a 36 inch bar. A nice used 660 seems to go for 600 ish where i live.
