It was 14 this morning so I loaded the liberty with some Yellow Birch and Cherry. We might get 18-26 inches of snow so I'll be clearing a Pine from a trail near the house so we can use it with the sleds if the above totals RRRRRRRRRRRR correct.
24f here now and it was down to 50 inside as we didn't burn last night. Light fine snow starting here, maybe an inch and no wind, yet. Various hardwoods bringing that indoor temp up.
I love the fact that in Canada -13 means use up the poplar and willow while it is warm out. Not that I've ever seen -13 here, but one would be forgiven for burning great-great-great granma's elm kitchen table in such weather here.
Loaded the stove a little bit ago. Solid 7" of snow and it's teaming down around 3" per hour. If these heavy bands keep up, we'll have some decent amounts. Plowed once so far.
Geez I laughed when I read that! It's far from the best wood, but easy access here makes it okay. My favorite easy access spot is about a 2 mile round trip per load, and the spot I just pulled 4-5 loads is around 4 mile round trip. Lots of guys burn birch, pine, and larch around here though, it's just further away, and my trailer at the moment is strictly a goat trail/country road hauler.
Forgot to mention, the weather has finally broke, and we're sitting at -4 C (about 24 F) right now. Looking for at/above the freezing mark daytime for next 2 weeks. Hello nice weather, goodbye chimney draft.
Easy access makes up for a lot. I've been burning Ailanthus for the last month or more. Not what most people consider great firewood (plenty of people don't even consider it acceptable firewood) but if you light it on fire it puts out heat. I'm trying to eradicate the damm things and I took a huge one down in my front yard. If I have to cut the SOB down, I'm burning it.
Feeding the Napoleon some white oak pizza slices. Forgot I had them in the garage. Cut some cookies and was gonna make a table but never happened so I split them up. Probably have about 20 slices. About 20 out now, down to 12 tonight.
It's around 13 tonight so I'll load the stove up with cherry and some sugar maple. Because they were saying we could lose power I pumped the basement full of heat with the pellet stove and wood stove starting around 3 this afternoon, the basement is 84 and up here is 74. We'll go with just the wood stove tonight.
Yep. 4 chunks in and they're throwing some serious heat. They were in the rafters of my garage for two years and it's like a oven up there so they gotta be pretty dry. I'll put a mm on a piece tomorrow.
About 5 degrees with some nasty a s s wind. Four good size splits of Cherry just put in for the overnight.
13 now, just coals in the stove 73 inside. Gettin chilly tonight, low 9, on deck, red n white oak, shagbark and a large round of Ash. I hope you are all safe out there with the big snow, no power loss no roofs caving in etc
