I have plenty of dry wood. I got a call from a guy I do business with that he was stuck down the road and could I pull him out. He sells wood on the side and got stuck in someones yard. I said sure. Wow you should have seen that load of wood. It was green as grass. I asked him about it and he said he was telling people it was wood. He had been out of his normal "seasoned" stuff for a month. I would guess this is happening all over this year.
I hope he is charging a ton for that wood. Better make what he can on them in one visit because he will never get a callback. I been selling firewood for what seems like ever, and I won't sell you a load I won't burn in my own stove. I will be over 100 full cord this year and only 2 new customers. You can't sell green wood and expect repeat customers! Unless it is sold as next years wood. Ted
I feel for the people that bought enough for a normal winter and it wasn't enough and are starting to run out, because I don't think there is any decent wood to be had at this point. I still have about 1.5 cords of this years wood left, but I could see myself breaking into a little of next years at the end of the season.
This has been a rough year on a lot of people's wood piles including mine. There are very few wood ads on CL right now.
It sounds like it's a case of nothing else being available. If he makes it clear to his customers that this isn't his usual quality and that he is only selling it as part of the polar vortex relief effort, he shall be fine.
I can't agree, it's green wood. He should be honest and tell them what it is. They will find out when they lift the first heavy piece and it hisses for an hour. Word of mouth is huge in the firewood business, he may not get a few calls after that delivery.
I guess the real issue is whether he is telling his customers that the wood is green or not. If he is telling them it's ready to go, then send some bad karma his way.
The bad karma you mentioned may just be the bad word of mouth coming full circle later on. What's worse is if he's out of seasoned stock now, what's he gonna be selling next fall?
I mentioned this to a few friends yesterday, and one of them said yah man you got to let that stuff sit for 30 days before you burn it, but you don't want it to sit to long and burn so fast it doesn't give any heat. So 30 days is seasoned around here, he should be good for next year.

Almost all I sell is green wood. Don't have place to season several hundred cords not to mention people wouldn't pay extra for it. Heck I had MANY customers that wanted it as wet as possible... "The dry chit burns too fast". Whatever... Not going to bite the hand that feeds me and argue.
Naw. I think a processor would take some of the fun out of it. Would certainly cut the time required though.
All over the place... I am amazed at how many places have taken down their signs around where I work. The landscape company in Dewitt usually has a huge block bin full all year of oak it is currently a parking space for the dump truck.
