I agree. My speeco splitter is horrible loud. I usually wear ear plugs then muffs over top. Probably overkill, but I hate ringing ears also.

Mine was a ryobi 4 ton splitter it heated this house for a good while... It's been a few years since we had it and I do miss it! There wasn't much it wouldn't split.

I see those are "on sale" for 899 at Lowe's right now, at least here in Iowa. I hear great things about them.

I've only the one splitter, the Timberwolf with the GX160, so a can't offer any comparison info, but when I read the start of the thread it reminded me of a time when a hunting buddy came out of the woods and across the field while we were splitting. We stopped to say hi and the first thing he said was something to the effect that he don't know we were there until a couple hundred feet away. His point was how quiet it was.

It's s good one! I had carb issues but that was due to the idiot that assembled it for display I'm convinced... I got on the line with Kohler and they took care of it. ( that's the short version ) That said it's a beauty and faster than I expected. It's more than capable of keeping two people going and WAY quieter than the TSC Speeco splitters I have used. (I have used a bunch of them and they are very good but very loud)

I vote the quietest splitter is a electric screw splitter.

Yeah, and the old didier of my buddy's finally roasted it's 5hp Briggs motor. A bigger Tecumseh is taking its place.

While decent motors, I think Tecumseh are some of the loudest.

I hate my Tecumseh on the snow blower that thing is a piece of )$@75)&)&!)&)))&(7)8)&!
Every year I have to fix something on that motor before I can use it.

Hope yours is an older better version. I can't even find parts now because they went under not long after I bought mine. :hair::headbang:

I hear Subaru is getting out of the small-engine biz. Perhaps they'll sell/license the Robin trademark to another reputable manufacturer someday. Going forward, Honda and Predator are probably some of the quietest out there as far as replacing older engines that are wearing out - so I hear on the Predators anyway. What's getting parts for Predator engines like?

eBay easy and some parts interchange of Hondas. They are chondas after all:rofl:

I have used a few and love them easy to start, cost effective, good on fuel and dead nuts reliable.

Just repower with a Predator? At 94.99 on sale right now at Harbor Freight, it's a lot less hassle. Tecumseh were never my favorite, but didn't have issues with them either.

Briggs is probably hoping their parts pipeline runs out for Tecumseh and they can let the existing Tecumsehs die a slow death. However, they will need to get on top of the Predator train and slow it down before it bleeds them dry. Hopefully they have a plan. There's NO reason other than labor cost keeping the US from building a China-beater small engine. More robots? Hard to justify the capital expense when Predators are $100 new and flooding the market.

I think Briggs is good but I am not a fan of the price. There are far better motors coming out of crates dirt cheap. We just put a lmt china motor on my friends generator direct for 5 year warranty it fired second pull and he's been using it 2 days now without a hiccup it cost $175 the replacement Briggs with less features was $410.
