For those who have ran both, how do they compare? I love my 038 mag, but the CAD in me says I might need a 460. I'm sure there are improvements in the weight and av on the 460, but what about power, and cutting performance? I'm sure I don't 'need' another saw of any size, but you know how it goes. Here's a pic of the 038 mag just for chits and giggles.
I'm aiming to do just that. I have the 038 Mag, and my buddy just picked up a 460 I ran ever so briefly. My 441 spanked his 460 in a 22" pine, but that was all due to chain. I hope to have a 70+cc shootout one day, if the snow ever lets that happen... I happened upon the 441 and couldn't pass up the price, damm CAD, but my 3 saw plan had been set with the 038 Mag being the biggest saw. Beautiful pic.
Here's another from the same day. My new gf was using my computer the other day. She saw the little icon for the first pic and asked if she could click on it to see what it was. I said sure and was wondering what kind of dork shed think I was with an 'artistic' pic of my favorite chainsaw. She opened it up and said it was an awesome pic. Definitely a keeper...
Beautiful Pics... Mulberry - Love me some of that... Ok done with that. I dont know how they compare. But I've got a 460 heading my way. From what I hear the 460 is a exceptional saw, and then when ported & MM she's been known to make grown men smiles. So CAD says Yea you should get one....
Close call there on the 38 mag vs a 460. The 460 would be my pick but they both sell well so if you can only keep one, it's no problem recovering $$ out of the other. If you pick up a 460, do not judge it until you get a dual port muffler on it. It's a pretty satisfying upgrade and cheap too. Major power gain over a stock muffler.
I have both, and there is very little difference between the two, i was a little disappointed with the 460 i was expecting a lot more. to be fair i was using the 038mag with 20" bar and the 460 with 28" bar so it was pulling more chain in bigger wood. i think the 460 is only 2cc more. Planning on getting the 460 ported.
The 440 Mag is probably closer to the 038 Mag than the 460 Mag, but all three of them are right in there close together. I got my 440 first, then the 460 (traded old ammo to a guy on CL who claimed it was a 440 without the tag, turned out to be a 460) and the 038 just recently via a trade with my sister. I think your CAD would best be guided by how big of a bar you ultimately want to cut with. Over 28", go for the 460. You certainly don't need anything else smaller than that with your inventory!
Maybe the dual port is why I like mine so much I never ran mine stock so I can't speak to the performance gains but it is way faster than my 272XP ever was
Stock 460 with the internal baffle/deflector is less than appealing. A dual port and it revs almost twice as fast, has an unmistakable "Ring" to it, and the extra power is amazing. .I ditched the entire stock can and front deflector. I bought an Aftermarket Can, a dual port cover and added a 3rd port on the opposite side... Tri-Port! ! Sounds good and is a violent saw to run. Wicked in the cut. As for the 038 Mag over 460? Never ran an 038. With displacement close, it probably holds its own, but my vote would be 460. They are Nasty
I think maybe I'll just keep my eye out for a good deal. If they're pretty close to each other there's no sense jumping on one unless it's a sweet deal. I have a 28" bar for it that I rarely get to use, so no need for anything bigger. I'm mostly in the 70cc range just cause it's fun to run with 20", 8 pin. I dual ported the 038 mag when I got it, so maybe that puts it close to a stock 460. I think I know where I can get a 460 for free, but it was smashed badly by a monster tree. I haven't seen it, but word is that there isn't much to work with. Heard the flywheel end of the crank even bent. It was smashed when it was newish and had been on the shelf since, prob 6 years back. Definitely worth a look.
Be careful with free MS460's, ESPECIALLY smashed ones. They get angry. REEEEAAAALLLLL angry. (Ask Certified106 ) Kinda have a grudge to settle. And this one was smashed by a tree? Oh man.... that's gonna pizz it off bad. Oh yeah, and when smashed, they spawn. Just like that, you thought you had one, and pow! TWO angry 460's show up! You can't keep 'em near each other either. I had to ship them out of state to separate addresses. Finally couldn't stand all the noise in the garage at night. Hey thanks Swags for agreeing to serve as parole officer for the second 460.
A 460 *should* be stronger than the 038 in any variety. The 038 was replaced by the 044. My early 044 feels stronger in the cut than my 038 Mag, but the 038 Mag definitely holds its own- especially for its time. Getting rid of that "bird cage" in the muffler on these newer Stihls is one of the best things you can do. They run cooler too! You will have to run my 038 some time, may have to bring it to the gtg. Definitely looking forward to the gtg
I hear that "Ring" loud and clear in my machine Dex, I thought it was just me! (Being deaf in one ear with constant tinnitus, I hear ringing all the time!) With its 20 ports (19 holes and original slit), this setup sings to you loud and clear!
It’s pretty easy to find an aftermarket dual-port muffler on the cheap. I’ve not run across a “bad” one yet but I have not built a saw in a few years now!
