So, spring is getting close. The Old Farmer's Almanac prepared many for a very hard winter. The stupid rodent said winter continues. But, reality is different many times.

I've been on this earth a good many years and have seen and experienced many things but in this past few weeks we've experienced many things that have never been so.

For example, I recall back around 1970 when the company transferred me to Indiana because of a new plant being built (was there a couple years). Going that far south meant quite a change in the weather patterns. What we did not like was hotter summer, more humid, tornadoes and winters were, say, different.

But the first spring we spent there we heard frogs in March. We had never experienced that. Then I remember in the 1980's I heard frogs in March here. Amazing as that had never happened before. Since then we've heard frogs in March several time, but this year, amazingly we heard frogs on February 28, again yesterday and today.

In addition, we've never seen robins this early here but many are back already. They usually show up here around March 20. Killdeer usually shows in April but we've had one already. Geese and ducks returning. Sandhill cranes returned in February.

This morning I was amazed to find a lilac with leaves already. This is amazing. Perhaps many who live further south have experience these things before but for those in the north, this is weird. In a way, it is a bit scary to see the seasons and times changing so fast. It does make one wonder about the future.

One more thing is the amount of wood we are, or aren't burning. I have to say this winter is the warmest winter I've seen for this area ever.

    What say ye?

Well across the little pond from you and a bit south Feb. sure didn't live up to its normal expectations. March well that has always been unpredictable. But generally expect at least one more dump of white stuff on the order of wet cement by the semi load.

I agree Chris. The old saying that the frogs have to be froze up 6 times usually holds. Robins have to get their tail feathers white at least twice. Time will tell on this.

About average, used alot more wood than that last year!
It was almost zero the past few nights, unusually cold. Froze all my SAP buckets.

Then again I'm not in your area,(Mi) but areas in the West coast are breaking records for snowfall, Hawaii is having a record winter as well, Wich is pretty interesting!

We've had very little snow this year and plenty of above average temp days, but that's getting to be the norm here in Pa. We have had plenty of rain though, so no worries of drought.
That really warm weather had everyone thinking that winter was over here, but this is the Pa mountains, winter doesn't give up that easy.
I will say that the cold and lousy weather is getting on my nerves, and I'm looking forward to those sunny 50 degree days where you can work and not drown in your own sweat.

Forgot to mention the pussy willows blossoming. Also today I noticed a lot of popple and maple with the buds opening.

We're seeing buds on trees and some farm fields turning green, probably barley or wheat.

Dennis, I have been telling my friends (both of them!) about this guy in L.P. who has been seeing sand hill cranes, robins, red winged blackbirds, etc and they're all rooting for you (for an early spring)!

Maybe you can put that dammed whistlepig out of business?? :salute:

I've heard March peepers in February when I was a kid. Also heard them making weird squaks I'm guessing from being too cold too peep correctly.
I've never seen a drought so bad the lake across the street completely dried up. Considering it had perch and hornpout before last year I'm guessing drying up completely is a extremely rare event. But I've only been around for decades not centuries. At one time there was a glacier here. So - things do change.

We are still very much in winter. over a foot of snow on the ground, snowed yesterday, and all day today. It was 15 degrees when I walked the dog this morning. Nothing even close to green here, well other than all the trees (remember WA is the evergreen state).

BUT this evening, still snowing, my wife heard frogs croaking while walking he dog. And today we saw robins for the first time this year.

    Crazy.

I remember being taught growing up that we're on the tail-end of an ice age. The past 2 winters seems to confirm that!

Same here, roughy 1400's to late 1800 was a mini ice age with much colder weather over Europe and America many causes for it some known many unknown. Some people belief the ice age continued into at least mid 1940 as some of the winter warfare we experienced in Europe. I'm all for renewable resources and wise stewardship of the earth but I'm also very skeptical of "greenhouse gases from the industrial revolution have caused the earth to rise xyz*" come on they can't even agree if eggs are good or bad for you how are they going to measure what the earth did last century and predict what's it's about to do.

My grandfather was a man of the earth. He told me the weather swings every 10 years, so that means 10 yrs going in and another 10 going out. He was a wise man. He could go into the woods and survive on his own. Even provide for the needs of a family. I think the weather is forever changing, just the way it is. Our life spans are too short to experience long cycles.

    Yep.

5" of snow all season, a couple 70° days last week, 62° yesterday, and then woke up to this a couple hours ago.

Now the weather guru's are talking about a nor'easter for next week. Certainly can be interesting living in Pa.

Weather is changing, slow but very sure. Hard to deny that.
