Fire Bricks

Ok guys, clue me in. Had some leftover fire bricks the seller sent with when we bought the Lopi. When we got the king he had one broke brick, and we replaced it with one of the bricks I got with the Lopi, and it was a much heavier brick and has held up much better. Looking at replacing every brick except that one. What do I need to know to get good ones?

 

There are different kinds of fire brick. If the brick is really heavy like you say, then it is probably hard brick.

 

Anyone got good brands, I'm trying to track some down.

 

I was talked down to for asking about using the heavier fire bricks in my summit on the "other" forum.
The light weight ones are an insulating type and are used for a reason but not sure how they change the operation or a EPA stove.

 

The Blaze King should have the heavy brick if its factory.

Do the blaze kings have the heavy non insulating type, I thought the EPA stoves used the insulating type.

 

Depends on what you are calling the "good ones", the heavy non insulating type can be found at Menards, the light weight ones that a lot of the new stoves have can be a little harder to find.

 

I want the kind that doesn't crumble right away.

 

I have no idea, just they are heavy. I broke a few when I pulled them all out one year (cleaned out the stove) and the only thing the stove shop had where light ones.
They were EXPENSIVE too, close to $10 each.

That's what Menards have, my old stove has them but most of the newer stoves have the light insulating type.
What type of lumber store do you have near you?

 

We are going to try TSC today, otherwise I think we are going to Kato on Wednesday, which has Menards, Home Depot, and Lowe's.

The Home Depot closer to us doesn't sell stoves, didn't realise that was a possibility.

I will be driving i90 clear to SD today, so I imagine I will be even closer.

The problem I am finding is that all the stores are out and they aren't reordering until fall.

 

I know Menards has them in Spencer.

 

Spencer is a bit of a haul from here, but if will be there Friday for work. Won't have a chance to pick them up, though. Really hoping one of the several places in Mankato has them, I want to go to Menards and Home Depot and check out the stoves we are considering.

 

Got the 18 fire bricks needed at TSC up in Worthington. They were out of the 6 packs but still had the individual ones for a decent price.
