I went out to cut yesterday, wanting to take advantage of the warm weather. Kinda protected here at home so thought nothing of any wind. When I got to the wood lot, I noticed all of the trees were being buffeted around. Turned on the local radio and found we had 25 mph winds with gusts to 45. No wonder! And of course, it was not from the right direction to be of use to me in felling trees. In fact, the opposite! I was standing out in the swamp getting a line on where I wanted the next tree to land, when a large widow maker was blown out of a tree and crashed to the forest floor. Although it wasn't in my immediate work area, it was in the same woods, so that settled it for me! Not cutting in this wind. Last fall, before the snow fell, I went around with the skidsteer and grapple bucket and gathered a bunch of logs that were laying on the floor. Once the snow hits, they would be lost until spring, so I piled them up in a clearing I had made. My guess is about a 10 cord pile. Didn't even make a dent in what is laying on the ground! Well, I saved them just for days like this where it is too windy to safely cut trees down. So I went over there to start cutting on them. I had rolled my window down in the truck and when I went to roll it up, it quit! It is a little warmer than it has been but not so warm I am going to have a window down all the time! I took that as an omen to get out of the woods! So I went home! And fixed the window which was a nasty job too! Must have been the right decision cuz I'm still here to tell this tale! Wow! I sure took the scenic route on telling you this, didn't I! I coulda just said it was too windy to cut and then my truck broke, but noooo, I have to have all that filler stuff in there too! lol Ted
Good decision to not cut in that kind of wind! Way to risky to have one blow back on you. I have seen some trees do crazy stuff when they get caught by the wind! Sorry about the truck window I hate fixing them as they are usually a pain in the butt.
I was out in the woods a couple weeks ago when the wind picked up all of a sudden. Lots of creaking and cracking. I packed up my stuff and got the heck out of Dodge.
Last fall, I was out there and about 150 ft from me an entire tree blew over. High wind and full canopy plus shallow root system, the tree never had a chance. I left that day too! Ted
The scenic route always adds more character to the story. Glad your back safe. I learned as I aged, sometimes the gods have a way of telling us to stop and move on. If I'm having a bad day and can't seem to get it right, I quit and try again tomorrow. Works for me.
When the planets line up just wrong for you, It's time to call the dogs & head to the house. I'm guessing no pictures to prove no wood was cut Any human bark damage working on the window.?
your right! No pictures! You know? I always forget to take my camera along out to the woods. Always think of it AFTER I have something worthy of a picture, dang it. No, bark removal on the window either. Now, there was some odd colored air in that garage though! Ted
