Directly across from my house(about 50 yards from my processing area) is a huge silver maple that the village is piecing apart bit by bit. Left for work this morning and talked to the guys a bit, they have delivered wood before and asked if I wanted any of this, even offered to chunk up just the nice limbs into 16" sections for me and take the giant trunk( trunk has to be 6' around at the base). Sadly I had to say no, I just don't have any more room on my small lot. I mean I do have room, just not if I want to have some yard also. Oh well, I'm ahead almost 4 years it just hurts a little to say no when your a true hoarder. Who else has had to turn down wood for whatever reason?
On a side note what do you think that stack is for on the neighbors house? Looks galvanized to me, gas fireplace?
The smoke stack you mean?? Looks like it is galvanized or some kind of coating. I know my parents looks like this and theirs is an oil furnace but they enclosured the metal with a wooden smoke stack for aesthetic reasons to match The house exterior. Now I have turned down wood because Im looking for better or its too far for me to get to even being free. I try to stick to about 30 mins from my house depending on the wood.
No one burns oil here, we have natural gas. Probably a gas stove. That wouldn't be approved for wood burning though, right? Just curious because ive never seen a stack like that. And yes it sucks to say no. I guess if some nice oak or locust came my way I might be able to find a tiny bit of room but I gotta be picky right now.
I feel for ya g60gti, got to be hard turning it down... there is a downside to small city lots.. but there is an upside too.. while my processing ares is measured at 2 acres and could be bigger if I wanted it to be,. no one has ever offered to cut and deliver me wood! in fact 3 out of 5 close neighbors burn.. heck our town garage has an OWB.. so anything the town cleans up goes there.. can you believe those guy want to fix equipment and drink coffee in a heated concrete building.. taxpayers paid for the system ....they pay for heat I keep hearing stories on here about hoarders getting wood delivered from tree services, towns etc.. just does not happen here that chimney setup here is for gas or propane in old wood or oil chimney... a lot of it in towns
Forgive me for i have sinned , oh lord of the scroungers , having refused several tree service dropped off loads (which amounts to a couple cord per load). I even had to turn down one of the golf courses.( last golf course deal was more than 60 cord of good hard wood) Though I lust mightily just no where to go with it. (Course if they happen to mention it is a load at the top of the btu chart I could be persuaded)
I think my heart skipped a few beats on the turn down. I'm still a little dizzy typing this, but I understand. There's always next time.
How dare them guys!!! I guess as long as they're heating with it and not using other resources then that's good. Me and the wife often talk about getting some land and building but there's definitely advantages to living in a village. Close to schools, restaurants, all the kids friends( when he's old enough) shopping and I can walk to at least 10 taverns within a 2 mile radius . Also the free wood is nice and the village has a whole ton of trees marked to come down this year. I actually imagine it will take a couple years to clear them all out so I should be good next time I'm in need.
My place has 3 large Ash trees that need to come down professionally. I was talking to the tree guy about it and he offered another Ash at his property. It is easy to access and I can leave the brush. Free firewood! I loaded up the truck and headed over to get the Ash. It has been warmer than usual and the Ash tree is also a honey tree. I just stood there and watched the bees in full work mode for 10 minutes. I even tried to figure out if I could pull some of the pieces away from the main swarm. It hurts to leave easy access wood.
Put a little 2 stroke oil in an old lawn mower and run it by the tree. The smoke will clear out the bees.
Couldn't you have rotated it into your stock and sold the seasoned that you rotated out??? go out to dinner and laugh?
Im gonna go out on a limb here thinking people don't like to burn wood because oil propane and the like are "simple and nearly maintenence free". I highly doubt that people realize the advantages to wood burning in comparison to fossil fuels. While I use electric I would prefer wood 75 percent of the time. Id be much happier with the way it heats because it would be much more "full" than the electric fans that churn out the power quite inefficiently. Its a much longer lasting heat especially in a smaller home. With wood being pretty plentiful I could constantly have fires. But for those folks its simplicity and convenience over efficiency, cheaper fuel and clean too.(provididing it is seasoned!) Plus i have to put in here that most oil and other fuel companies push the companies that sell wood to sell gas and appliances that heat fossil fuels.
