Tis okay except for the fact that when most people split wood, they do not use the entire distance so it can be very misleading. For example, if one can split 23" wood but only splits 16" wood, there is no good reason to bring the wedge all the way up as that would just be wasted time and wear on the machine. In addition, a lot of wood can be split by just using a very few inches of travel with the wedge, like when splitting ash or soft maple. Many times we drop the wedge about an inch into the wood and it is split so travel time of the wedge is only a couple seconds at most. This is why I usually caution people on making a big thing out of the speed of the splltter.
I would say that the calculator is not misleading in and of itself, but leaning on the calculated results to make a purchase decision would be misleading.
I agree with everything you wrote Backwoods. I would add that single-stage pump vs 2-stage pump is a far more important consideration.
Given that 1/2 stage can directly impact cycle time under load, I can understand your confusion CoreyB.
