I didn't get a picture but tomorrow after we put in some wood we have a double trunk maple that I'm going to bring down. It's not a big tree but it will increase the btu inventory some. The yellow birch area I was working on before we had our last big snow should be opened up for cutting especially if we get some rain this week. It's in an area that doesn't get much sun. With the treadmill workouts done on Wednesday afternoon, I plan on being in the woods cutting so I can get my ten face cord early.
Gasifier , I'll have them for tomorrow night, I think it's a red maple but we'll find out tomorrow. Backwoods Savage , I will. I'm hoping this warm weather opens up the lot I usually cut on so I can get some of the bigger stuff that's down.
The first thing I did outside was put some of our better firewood in, once the stuff in the basement is burned we'll have only used two face cord. The double trunk Maple (I think it's a Red) was not the best but I'm glad we brought it down today. The first pic is the top, the second is the double trunk, the third is the first drop (the left side looking at the 2nd pic) the 4th is the chitty wood, the next pic is the last drop of the Maple, the stump, the pic after the stump are the rounds from the first drop and the rounds from the last drop.
It felt good getting some firewood today until I saw the inner part of the rounds. Thanks woodsman416 , the sun was strong in that area so it was nice cutting. Tomorrow will be a day off from cutting but on Wednesday some Pine trees will come down so the house on that side will get more sun. I did get back in the area we have some damaged Yellow Birch but the snow is still to deep to work, the big hill in the back blocks most of the sun but after the warm weather and the rain move in that area might be ready for next week.
Looks like da rats been gnawing at some of dem der rounds! Can't win em all, but at least you got to run a saw and be outside. That makes a few empty centers no big deal.
It was near my wife's walking trail so I feel better that it's down, I didn't realize it was that bad before I cut. We have some damaged birch near that area so those need to hit the ground too, I don't expect much good wood out of them either. Back on our other property I do most of the cutting on has some nice size Cherry down with some smaller Beech down too but we'll need to more snow gone before I get back in there.
To cut something other than ash would be a welcome change of pace here. I've only 2 large ash trees left to take down. They're in the 24" and 28" DBH range and the other 75 or 80 are in the skinny to anorexic range. I keep dreaming of a time when a friend will need me to take a big oak, cherry or hickory to make room for a shed.
I bet the deer are eating the buds off the branches I left for them, we'll see Wednesday. We have another damaged Maple near this that I'll take down so the deer can go after that too. The sledding season might be over after this big warmup this week.
