The second of the last 3 large ash trees on my property is now down. One left before eye surgery. I put a wedge in the ground as a target and put it down almost on the wedge. I misjudged the height of the split in the tree otherwise I would have nailed it. This tree had a very large amount of front lean and I could/should have used a different technique but it came down where I wanted it without any kind of "collateral damage." My next problem is how do I get it out of the woods?!?! Too much chance of tipping the BX and I can't get the Tacoma anywhere near it. I guess it will be like the last one: dragged out one round at a time.
Nice job on the placement of the drop. Now put a winch on the back of that BX and drag it up to flatland.
Or get close enough with the tractor and some rope/chain to drag it where it's easier handled. Much of my recent stuff has been pulled out with about 100' of chain and rope. That's as close as I can get but I'd much rather skid it whole to where I can get truck and trailer near it to load as I cut Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No way of getting to it without tipping the tractor. I've never tipped it over up there but I've had it up on 2 wheels enough to scare the hell out of me and keep me from doing it again. Nice winch set up what kind winch and how much? If you don't mind me asking. Wouldn't do any good to go up hill, has to go down' which sounds easy but it ain't., I think I may be able to attach about 200' of rope and pull it 100' down hill......maybe. I will check it out tomorrow and come up with a plan.
If you was asking me about a winch I don't have one. I just hook up and keep dragging with my truck when possible. As far as tipping the tractor, I say go for it! Just have someone videoing Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Don't tip your tractor. I've picked up more than one person who has done that. Some made it with injury, some were DRT.
I avoid putting myself in that position! I had her up on 2 wheels and I can only say some divine hand held it from flipping. That's all it took for me to get smart real fast!
You could cut the logs a bit shorter. It may take more trips to get it out but you would not be handling each round.
You can do eeeet! With some careful planning, that is... I have an open faced block that can be lashed to a tree for ease of operation...it's been a loooong time since used, but it's the ticket.
Ralphie I bought the winch at TSC and the hitch mount but HF has one that works also. I don't like cables so I replaced it on the winch with a HF winch rope. Also bought an extra one to use as a rope from the tree to the winch rope giving me 100' pull. The winch is $139.00 The rope is only $25.00 they have worked great for two years now.
Nice Ralphie Boy Looks like it broke up a bit on the top as it came down. Sign it needed to come down. When I was a younger man I used to cut logs into 3' or 4' lengths, hoist them onto my shoulder and carry them out. Used to put a pad on my shoulder if they were too heavy or rough. No. I do not do that any longer...
Do you have wheel weights or fluid filled tires? They'll lower the center of gravity a decent amount. Although some hills just aren't worth risking it on regardless.
Yep, been standing dead for at least a season, maybe more. They shatter like glass and make a big mess when they've dead fro a while.
I've got both and I keep the mowing deck on to use as an outrigger but the hills are just too steep to be safe. My drive way hits 22% grade!
