House near my work had a section of a large sugar maple taken down by power service. Stopped by yesterday to inquire about the wood. Owners said have it all. Had the day off today and nice weather in the upper 40's. Headed down this morning (5 min from house!) - cut it all and split into big chunks. Neighbor and I took his F250 down and one full load and another 1/2 load - all piled at the house. Should be an easy 1/2 cord or so. Hadn't had need to run the 372 in a few months but the biggest wood was good for a 24"bar. Need to stop back tomorrow to see if they want me to clean up a pile of punked wood - there wasn't much, but happy to haul it where they'd like it. Cheers!
I've been burning a lot of maple this year, mostly silver. Seems to get light pretty quick but burns fine for me. Great score there for sure!!
Thanks Wolverine - I've been burning a lot of red maple this winter. Silver and red are under-rated - certainly lower BTU wood, but a load of good sized splits in a modern stove and you've got a good long fire. Cheers!
Nice work and good score NH_Wood though I must ask-Is that wood from the orange tagged tree? I dont see a stump otherwise-any ideas of seeking permission to remove the rest? Or is the owner hoping to maintain it in part for a bit? As the owner of originally 5 silvers that my grandfather planted in 1956, only one remains untouched and healthy and it over hangs my front porch-the others, (2 are gone) once hacked by the power company slowly die-I have to remove the other 2 sooner than later-Just curious as a hoarder...again nice score!
I have a ton of this sitting in my yard. I will say it is a pain in the azz to split. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks Ashwatcher - all of the wood was trimmed from that tagged tree - they left the big butt and a leader. I think the owner wants to keep it, but spied a dead oak leaning over his backyard........Cheers!
The big rounds took about 10 swings to pop - smaller just a few. Not too bad - better than I thought it would be. Cheers!
Yes sir, yard trees are a pain more often than not-its from the hacking over time-I just want my one remaining untouched by human hand to out live me...Its the most beautiful maple in all the land (through my eyes anyway)
That's a great score! Premium wood like oak, sugar maple, beech, hickory, locust etc is all great, but I've had some awesome fires with only basswood, which makes red maple look like primo wood.
There's snow up there? Wish there were some here. Oh yeah, nice haul! ~smile~ Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk
Yes, my apologies...Welcome mirnldi - You're gonna like it here, I guarantee it! We wont counsel, encourage or enable your addiction-we like pics, beer, dogs and spending your money on toys to feed your need...so you got that going for ya right off the bat... Nice to meet ya!
Wow great score there. I always keep an eye for dead/fallen hardwoods that need a new home while I'm out driving and working. Got one tree company in town I buy from every now and then but you can't beat free wood. Got a lot of red/white oaks here in my part of East NC. Looks like that 372 made short work of that maple though -Rick T2 Tappin'
I had this HUGE Red Maple fall at the very top of my hill. The base is over 3' diameter. The pictures don't do it justice. That's a tractor road it's fallen across. I heard Red Maple is just so-so when it comes to burning, it will produce A LOT of wood...but is it anything to be giddy about?
Yes, it is and a great compliment to your establishing the 3 yr plan-Great shoulder wood- Welcome Moparguy , you're gonna like it here, I guarantee it-this site is unlike any other-nothing but positives here-good peeps, nothing but help...and a lil enabling...So, you got that going for ya... Nice to meet ya!
Thanks, and you too. I don't know if I can do the 3 year plan or not...every available space I have has a car occupying it. Plan on building an actual wood shed (right now using a 100 year old barn) very soon. I forgot...it was so lucky to snap off 2 medium (10"-12" base dia) beech trees...you can see part of one still standing a little left of the mid picture (there's a tree leaning severely diagonal behind it in the background).
Welcome again and remember, cars are temporary, wood is forever...I love cars too (a member of old cars young women club) but wood is all I can count on to keep my house warm...just something to think about
