Compare it to the ash you have. When dry and well seasoned, the weight should be similar. If it's noticeably heavier, it's likely sugar. It's hard to tell from your pics (no bark) but I'd venture a guess that it's silver.
Just an update post. I got home last night after a 6 day vacation out west. After unloading, I went out to split some rounds. I have more wood on the way, and need to make room. As I was splitting, a truck pulls up in my driveway, which I didn't recognize. Turns out he owns a tree service, and is dropping 3 large ash trees down the road. After a brief convo, he's going to bring them to me in log form in a few days. I'm going to be a splitting fool for awhile, I think. I also picked up some free skids today in anticipation of the score. I am now in the market for some chaps. Any recs? Anyway, here is a progress pic as of last night. pjcalla I am going to guess those are not sugar maple the bark ring does not look right... Up here on the border there is sugar maple for syrup and red maple for tourists. I have not cut a lot silver ... we call them swamp maple.. Part of the reason maple is one of hardest trees to ID is there are so many types.. and that's before hybrid (basically making a sugar maple with bright red leaves) aka autumn blaze and autumn glory.. our university did a lot of that in the early 1900s
Haha! Log loads delivered and no stove yet! Your official now. Somebody get him his fhc members card. Chaps: I have stihl chaps for no reason in particular. If I had to buy some tomorrow, Menards carries Chaps for half of what stihl cost. ($40 or so iirc). Bar oil is on sale for $5 a gallon also.
That stack is growing pretty quickly I see. Cannot beat that deal! Ash is always welcome in the pile. Looks like that spitting block may not make it LOL !!! It is looking a little nervous.....
You dirty dog you, getting free wood delivered to your doorstep. Congrats; free wood is all the sweeter.
I just want to publicly thank bocefus78. He put up a "WTB : Free" ad looking for wood that people want to get rid of on another forum we're both on. He's including me on his finds. Today, I was able to get a bed full of sugar maple, and there's a bunch more coming from this particular scrounge. He also offered to come over to help me buck the logs that are supposed to be dropped off in the next few days! Thank you, bocefus78, it was great meeting you today. Good meeting you as well, and there's no thanks needed. Like I said....it's nice to have help move the weight. It always comes in spurts. Either it's more wood than you want, or you don't see chit for 2 years.
Welcome pjcalla and bang from yet another Indiana native! I can't get myself to use the "H" word on account of me being a Boilermaker and all... I've also had the pleasure of meeting Chris ( bocefus78 ) - he's a great guy! I don't have much to contribute in the Wood Pile forum, but wanted to say hello nonetheless. HELLO!
It's been awhile since I've updated, so, in case anyone is following along , here goes. It's been a little over 2 months since I started this journey of hoarding. My main goals were free heat and exercise. As of now, I have about 2.5 cord s/s, with another cord in rounds (noob guess) sitting in my driveway, and another 1.5 cord waiting to be picked up. I am still learning tree id, but gaining knowledge every day. My splitting skills have greatly improved, as well as my stacking, but I still hate the latter. I'm down 15 pounds from when I started (no diet changes, still love barley pops), gaining muscle, and overall feel better. I still need an insert/stove for next year, but at least I'll have dry wood. I need practice sharpening chains, but that will come. I want to thank everyone on this forum for the wealth and breadth of knowledge that is shared freely and without judgement, you all really make a noob feel welcomed. And the gratuitous pics (I believe I've shared these before, but a good post need pics ): Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
