started the new job this week, so I have been busy and missing out on this site. I found my retirement plan Sunday though........the local hardware store is selling firewood. For $109 (before tax) you can buy 1/3 of a cord (ala facecord). Of the 30 ish cords, maybe 1/3 is a year seasoned, but has no top cover. The rest is fresh cut and split without cover also. Appears to be mostly ash and is split down to a pretty small size. This is a great hardware store, with the best lumber selection I have seen so nothing against them. This is an affluent suburb, so I need to tap into this market and live a happy life cutting wood.
Always good to have a plan. But cutting wood in your retirement will only last as long as you stay really healthy. Our joints have a way of wearing out despite our best plans. If you work smart and use tools whenever you can, you should be good for a few years anyway. Hope you have a plan B. Just noticed you are 36, no wonder that looks good to you. Alot of places here sell the small bundles of firewood also. Its all over the charts everything from a wheelbarrow load of juniper for 5$ to 3 skinny little splits of white fir for 8$.
Be fun to work for yourself. Don't have to do more than you want Sell a few cords a year for beer money
The problem with selling firewood is mostly that your time does not seem to be worth much in the end but it can be enjoyable work.
Bags and bundles are the way to go! That is all we do and have negotiated exclusive wood selling deals at 10 DFW area state parks and are picking up 4 more by the end of Feb...... 2016 we started with 3 small camp grounds and grew from there..... 45 full cords for 50K for the year....we are projecting 150 cords for 2017......If anyone one knows reliable wood cutters in East Texas I have parks that want wood but I cant reach that far.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is well over $1000 per cord. I too would go into business for the amount!!!! Might even buy a processor.
I've never sold wood, but twice there has been a guy, wearing cheap blue slacks, a plain white dress shirt and driving a nondescript white car, stop while I was working in the wood lot, and ask me to sell him wood. No doubt he works for the county and was trying to nail me fo having a business without a license and failing to pay County tax. They're fanatic about that here; afraid they're gonna loose a buck.
I definitely see the bundle thing working out and being profitable. I just look at how long and how much work goes into making a cord of wood for me and nope ain't happening.
