Wow, lot's of great options around ~$400. New, I'd go with one of FordF150's saws. Used, I really like my Stihl MS361 as a single, do it all saw. It's dead solid reliable, light enough to run all day and can handle just about anything. I used it with a 20" or 25" bar to buck some 20-30" oak logs and it was fine. An MS261CM or even and MS260 is another great used option. Honestly, I liked my older MS260 better than my current MS261CM. I wish I'd never have sold the 260. That's my $0.02. I buy mostly Stihl since my local OPE shop carries them and treats me right.

I got my MS260 Pro model used on Craigslist for about $300 a few years ago. It was a little rough looking, but it started up on the second pull when I went to look at it. I did end up taking it to my local small engine repair guy and have him give it a once over, but that was just a new air and fuel filter, chain sharpening, etc. It does require a little tweaking every now and then, but other than a slow bar chain oil leak (maybe it's normal?) and a few extra pulls if it's been sitting a while, I love it. When its time, I'll probably look for another used saw assuming I get several years out of this one.
