It's a little bit yellower than in the pics. At first I thought it might be hemlock but it is way too hard. Not enough knots. Yellow ? Pretty darn good burn and heat , about 6 hours but the last hour or so is LOTS of coals and ash. Burned it all day today and considering I just cleaned the ashes out yesterday . It's hard to tell because of all the coals buried in all the ash. Yeah, kinda dirty. That's what I get when I don't top cover. Pine needles, leaves, maple blossoms and seed helicopters, etc., etc.. Ends up everywhere so I have to sweep up everywhere. A lot. Avoiding comments from the peanut galleries.
It's hard to tell from the pictures what it is, you're in the same area as me, so it should be something I'm familiar with.
I can't use my wood in the house if it's dirty. Wife sends me back outside side to clean it off. Billb3 I top cover only to keep the pine needles and leaves off the stacks. As far as what you have there l can't tell but being right down the street from you I have some that look the same that I have never id.
I don't think there's too much Elm growing in our area BillB. I also don't think the splits would be quite that cleanly separated (no stringy mess) Looks to me to be soft Maple or swamp maple
