BTU charts vary somewhat, but generally beech is right around the same BTU content as red oak, sugar maple and yellow birch. The white oaks, hickories and locusts (and black birch, my favorite firewood) are all a bit higher. I gotta take pictures, I have some beech trees on the ground now that will probably yield close to 12 cords of wood. A couple of the butt logs are over 36" diameter. Infected badly with beech bark disease and they were taken down last summer.
Beech is a fair bit better than any oak btu wise, just slightly less than ironwood. It's great stuff. I'll be playing with my beeches today as well. It really looks like a great day too get some work done in the woods.
Liking all the pictures, and beech. Your beech looks a lot different then ours here, it all has canker and is dying.
11 degrees yikes! I didn't grow enough winter coat for that this year . That tractor sure looks good full of wood.
Last two buckets of today. Still have two buckets of split sized (12 inch plus) up there and five or so buckets of small rounds. The pile is building for next weekends splitting!!!!
Woodsnwoods glad to see you're getting it done. After reading your posts yesterday I couldn't wait to hit the woods today. But no go, too much mud, red clay slick as grease, so settled for moving a load of 3 year SS oak home from the farm.
Driver, thanks for the post. Mud here is actually pretty bad, but I just went with it and back bladed on the last trip out. Enjoy the oak. Glad to see you drive a Silverado also.
