The Isocore is much heavier than the X-27. Fox, it almost looks like an 8 lb. sledge with a maul wedge molded into the back of it.

I use both on a daily basis. I use the maul to quarter large rounds and to bust through knarly knots. The 27 gets "surgical" duty, dissecting the chunks left by the maul.

Yep, as a matter of fact I was looking to get a heavier sledgehammer because all I had was a 6 lb, I saw this tool with the wide faced Sledge on one side and thought that would be great, get me a Sledge with a Wide face and heavier maul all in one, the maul works great and that wide face Sledge is fantastic for smacking in wedges. I don't have to swing it as hard as a 6 lb and the wide face doesn't miss the wedge as often

Exactly how I use mine. I have both and use the IsoCore 8# Maul to bust up the big rounds and get through knots. Once I get them smaller size, I switch to the X27.

Just picked mine up from post office....& promptly went to what's left of my pile of rounds. Wow. Very fun to use. I broke up a few 20"+ rounds, most with knots and one knarly crotch. That one will get saved for the hydro, but after a handful of whacks, it gave up. Impressive. It'l get used to break the big ones in half or quarters so I can lift them to the hydro easier.

I might need to get one of these. What's the acronym for maul or axe addiction syndrome?

Seriously I'd like to compare it to the GB maul for fun.

I busted up some knotty spruce over the weekend. And extra few lbs might have been helpful.

I finally got my hands on one of the Isocores, at a TSC. IT felt heavy.

I have an older heavy maul and I have the x27. I use the x27 all the time, since I've had it. I think windup speed wins over weight, in my opinion.

If I have a round that the x27 is not up to dealing with, then it's time for wedging-n-sledging.

Hello, I'm a newbie here. I just moved into a house that has a wood burning stove disconnected and sitting in the garage. I just need to call a chimney inspector and hook it back up. I want to have it ready to use next year but in the meantime want to get some wood split.

    Two questions:

    1) where can I get wood rounds to split? Everything to buy online is split already. I want the experience of splitting my own wood.

    2) If you had to choose just one, either the 8lb maul or X27, which would it be? Can the maul split them as they get smaller in diameter?

Really excited to buy one of these...They both have amazing reviews and that maul just looks like a beast. Just need to find some wood to split!

Welcome! I'm pretty much a newbie too, but I have the Isocore 8lb Maul, the X27 and the Husqvarna S2800. If you had to choose one of those two, DEFINITELY the x27. I'm a relatively big dude and the IsoCore Maul is heavy to swing...it gets you gassed fast. Plus, it's kind of tough making accurate cuts - you're basically just trying to get it overhead and bring it down. A X25 or X27 would be much better for making smaller splits.

Pretty much I only use the IsoCore Maul for starting out big rounds - halving them or quartering them. Then switch to the X27 or S2800 to get them into final splits.

As far as finding rounds not on your property, check Craigslist - that's how I've been getting mine. I've found some ads where people had a tree cut down by a pro and they just want their rounds gone and their yard clean. Other times, people have big properties with fallen trees and you have to take a chainsaw and cut your own rounds from the trees on the ground.

Thanks for the quick reply! I guess I'll just keep an eye out on Craigslist for people looking to get rid of rounds. I don't have a chainsaw yet but I plan on getting one of those also. Although I don't have land, we just moved to a small river town with lots of woods around.

I was set on the x27 before I found the maul, and was just impressed as hell by the look and weight of the thing, but yes, accuracy makes all the difference.

Jon, not sure your location, but maybe you could find another member here, or a "cutting buddy" locally. You help load and split wood in trade for some of it. It'd be learning experience and might lead to more firewood and tools .

Definitely get the X27 first. You will get the maul down the road, I promise. Another option for finding wood is to contact a tree service in your area. Not sure where you are, but most of the time they just take the logs to the dump (around me anyway). They would rather give them away for free than to pay to dump them.
