OMG its -12c/10.5f right now! Its the warmest its been in I dont know how long. I took the opportunity with this warm weather to rally the troops into stocking the garage with our two piles of wood today. Next to the garage door that leads into the house we stacked 7-10 days of lodgepole pine and doug fir for day time burning and on the other side we stacked a wall of larch for overnight burns. I think I saw 2 pieces of birch in there which is the last of it.... I had a load of lodgepole in the stove at around 6 pm which helped the house get up to 24c/75f (measured upstairs from the stove in the middle of the house) It was getting a bit warm so we opened a window in the kitchen. Ive raked the coals forward now and will load the stove with larch for the overnight pretty soon. Kids go back to school tomorrow after a great Christmas break. Its powering down snow right now but its fine flakes so its hard to say how much we will get.
7 out 67 inside after a brief shutdown. Grate I built Friday was setting on remnants of the old grates . Only the center was broken out. Went to empty the ash clean out at 7pm and the rest of the old grate and new one was IN the ash clean out !!! Let it go out and about midnite clean ashes and removed all the grates . Went to shop and fabbed up some tabs to hold new grate in place . Not what I wanted to be doing at midnite .Fired up and bringing back up to comfortable temps. New grates will get ordered tomorrow morning.
I think we have a few cold days to go, and then it's (hopefully!) gonna walk right up into absurd territory within 8-10 days. Here's a parody video poking fun at Sask people, with a few weather references.
Real feel is still below zero. Today will be hitting around 10-ish for a high and some more white stuff starting this afternoon again. Haven't looked outside to see how much the squall dumped on me last night. Maybe 6" more by tomorrow.
A couple cold ones last night, wife's home made soup, and a French bagette I cut into slices and made into garlic cheese bread is taking care of dat!
Current temp - 8°F headed up to 15°F. We never got any significant winds, just a breeze. Loaded the oakleaf with ash and birch.
It's -10 here. Boiler ran right out of wood. I've got it going again, but it will be a long haul getting everything warmed back up again with the heat demand we have. The bubbling goo is flowing an a burnin!
Is your buffer tank cold too? Or just won't be able to heat that up with the heat demand for the rest of he house? -1 here with some cherry cooking in the Buck.
Yes. Buffer was at 145. But the buffer keeps putting heat out after boiler cools down, until it too goes cold. So it extends wood system heat output for a while anyway. Oil boiler turns on when buffer goes below 150. Boiler is now back up to 175 and starts to throw heat out at 170. At 170 the aquastat tells the circulation pump to get its butt to work. And it has been a very reliable pump for six seasons now.
16° and 26° later. I tossed in a few sticks of oak to keep it fed until it's light enough to do it proper without stumbling aimlessly around and tripping over things that may or may not be there.
-1 here, I had 5" of coals this AM from last nights late top off with wood. Tossed in some Cherry, Maple, & Beech. She's burning good now.
Got as low as 4° overnight. Oil burner turned on as the Endeavor ran out of wood. Too cold to go outside and pick up splits. Waitin till it warms up to at least 10°.
Been looking at wood boilers for years.. I'm not sure I'd let the oil boiler kick on unless the house started getting cold but I'm frugal (cheap).. Looks like a boiler operator from the old site updated his online control information.. I watch it every now and then as I dream of getting my own boiler and storage system... http://www.nofossil.org:7281/public/gaugepanel.html Looks like you can extract more out of your storage by adding radiant heat which operates at a lower temperature.. Every year I'm one year closer to getting a wood boiler!!!!!
still 2 below 10 mph winds got snow but with the winds.. maybe inch.. we got 1 more than you MUD.. when frost goes out.. I swear this jacked up mud truck bog thing some do in the south for fun... we started it.. ya need a 6 inch lift kit to get to a paved road...
9 out 70 in OAK and COAL. May work in shop all day catching up on maintenance. Rest of week looks +25 . One day in the 50's.
Without the windchill we had -12 this morning but the P.S. & the W.S. had it 72 up here. We're back to burning just the wood stove.
Pineapple Express is paying us a visit. Gentle rail at the house, really going to make a mess with all the snow still on the ground. Tunnels were 29deg. (11K) this morning and they're forecasting 10"-28" over the next 48 hrs. Only burning 1 load a day right now, too warm.
I saw that calli was getting hit hard. They lost that famous giant tree...... Pioneer Cabin Tree in California felled by storms - BBC News
My sister in Sacramento had to sandbag her garage, just too much rain all at once. I've been to that tree many, many moons ago. Sad it's gone.
