Firewood to Mulch

As I work outside preparing for the weekend snow I can hear in the distance the sounds of wood being turned into mulch. I am guessing it is work under the power lines. If I had a truck, I would head out to hunt it down and see about getting some firewood. Years ago before I got the wood stove, we had a major wet snow and ice storm that took down a lot of trees. I watched that year of good firewood being turned into mulch and then spit out on the verge.

 

Yeah -- those wood chippers can sure reduce burning sized branches into tiny bits, real quick.

 

Not just branches, I was amazed at the size of the trunk they were putting through that thing.

 

Before I started heating with wood (about 10 years ago) I would run everything through the chipper that I could shove down it's throat. That would be anything 12" in diameter or less. Didn't matter what kind of wood; pine, maple, oak, locust, it all got chipped. Now, if it's 3" or larger, I keep it. The chipper is almost 20 years old now so it's probably wise to not push it to the limit.

 

I could hear them today in a different location. I cringed every time I heard the noise. If I just had a truck.

 

Not that I have anything against mulch, I use hardwood mulch in the flower gardens.

 

250xp? If so, hard not to chip it. My 250xp is always hungry.

Everything but the tires, knives and anvil is original. I've been meticulous with oil changes and almost daily greasing of all the bearings. Oh wait, I had to replace the hydraulic lines about 5 years ago too. They were pretty dry rotted and one of them blew out so I replaced them all.
