How many collect pallets to burn?

I see an awful lot of them available on CL, and was wondering if they are worth the bother. Free is free, right?

I collect them from work occasionally. One thing is certain- not all pallet material is <20% MC!

I cut up a few pallets each year mostly for kindling but sometimes for some filler pieces too. I can't imagine burning them all the time as it is quite the job taking them apart (I don't burn nails or staples, so that makes the task a real pain).

They're usually better than nothing and hiding under a dozen blankets.

I use them to stack my wood on and to split to kindling!

I used to drive by a house that must have used pallets almost exclusively.. Always had hundreds in the yard, until burning season when you'd see the stacks start to shrink. It always made me chuckle a bit, because the same house has a stack of pine logs the size of a modest ranch house rotting into the ground.

For me, I used them the first couple years with my owb to get a hot fire going before filling with my horribly unseasoned wood. Saved my butt many times.

I just had a friend help me out with some pallets with some wood in return. I Also have to say that the pallets are a possible wood source but not always burnable. Tonight I took apart what was not exactly a pallet but rather a wood frame with wood blocks under it. Grabbed a couple of these since they are the closest you get to a solid log. You can make off well with the slats and the stringers but I find those are best suited to fit your other wood. Be it scrap or not, the pallet box is becoming a huge liking. Always two thumbs up from me. I find how relatively easy it is to just form a box then add to that idea. Plenty of scrap wood around here. But Im running low on screws now!!:faint::hair:. Oh well! The great part about having the scrap is its easy to burn. When you find that much scrap, you wonder if a pallet will meet your demands.

One serious question I have to ask is the safety of the pallets is up for grabs right?
Having read a lot about the MB and whatnot warnings. There are the stamps involved. Not all stamps are the IPPC so question is, are all pallets without the stamp unsafe? Im not sure to trust the several sites I checked because not all pallet makers will follow that and not all pallet makers are past state lines. I live within minutes of pallet makers and reporposing businesses they dont bother putting much on the pallet but it would seem absurd to think that pallets without the stamp are not safe. I wish i could really find a more in depth website of pallet stamps, this would shed a bit more light on the subject.
