Yes, the path of the gasses go right for the top of the door as it goes up and over the baffle. So the opening of the IS is larger and in more direct path of the smoke than any of their side loaders. That being said I don't really have any issues with smoke spillage with mine unless the firebox is really cool and I'm trying to get it going again on little coals, and most of the time it's only just brief as I can shut the door right away typically.

I'd have preferred the side loader. That was a big plus for PH when I was debating between PH and IS. I've had 4 front loaders now come through here and every darn one of them had the door opening the wrong way.:headbang: Of course the AS wasn't out yet, but even now I need a bigger box than it offers for my main stove but would always consider it for a second one. Right now I'm using pellets for my secondary heat. The stove was fairly cheap and it was a lot easier to run pelletvent up my 7" or whatever it is masonry chimney. The fuel cost more, but having to run a new pipe (either 5.5" or ovalized) plus the extra cost of the AS... not sure if it would be cost effective or not. I do plan on moving here eventually, probably 8-10 years and taking the IS with me if it's still in good shape. I am planning my next house to be easily heated with 1 stove and not need the second one. Wish I could make that happen sooner!

Going on 5 years with the Fireview. Can't see any reason at all to spend more than a couple grand on a different stove Woodstock or other brand. Happy with things just as they are.

It's been a while since I've posted here. Some of you may remember my first Ideal Steel as the infamous pooper....in any event, the replacement stove that Woodstock sent has performed beautifully. No creosote dripping on the hearth pad even though I'm not thrilled with the quality of 2016-2017 wood. At this very moment, the Ideal is blasting out front and top heat even though the air control lever has been damped down to the 2nd notch. The chimney is pulling a great draft and an outside air kit is on order because I am paranoid about a negative pressure situation. Some of my friends own pre-EPA smoke dragons and they are stunned by the black magic of the Ideal.....it puts out a ton of heat with no visible fire and cool stack temps.

golf66 , so glad things worked out for you in the end. I remember seeing your dissected stove at WS last season at the open house. Lorin and Tom
were able to answer some of my questions with regards to the moisture leaking from the rear of the stove, they took me to the back section of the plant
and showed me your stove with a serious grinder cut-a-way of the main air intake.

Long story short they said they would modify the main intake with a new baffle of sorts, to eliminate the leak.
I had the leaky moisture too, although this year I have yet to see it. In my case I would blame it on questionable wood, not the stove. No issues yet this year.

Hope all is well with you and your crew!!!!!!

Good deal. I feel bad about this situation because the new Ideal has been, well, ideal :emb: There were a series of physical occurrences with the stove and missed communications that led to substantive misunderstandings. Woodstock made good as their reputation suggested they would and the new stove is doing great.
