I was up to a neighbors house late spring when he was telling me he was working on some burls (not sure what kind) so I told him about the cherry burls we had so after he said he was interested I brought it up. He said that he would keep one and make something out of the second burl for us, I talked with him the other day and nothing yet.
Zap, a little reminder wouldn't be out of order. Getting kinda antsy to have a look see of those opened up myself!
I was under the impression that if a burl was to be turned on a lathe (what else, right?) it would be best to do while it was green.
Hey... If he's going to give you a bowl out of one of those burls, I could learn to be very patient...
They'd make some nice bowls! I still have this huge coffeetree burl here, I'd like to send it up to fishingpol so he could work his magic on it, but it's big and heavy!
I believe my lathe can only take a 12" block. The real nice lathes can turn the motor outbound on the base and turn much larger stock. That one Scotty has may be worth something to a serious turner. Burls can be a crap shoot if they are hollow inside with little structural integrity.
The guy I brought this to said that he owed my sister in-law a bowl out of this for bringing it up, he told my wife that today. I called and left a message that I brought this up, we'll see what happens. I always wanted to ask him if he ever did anything with the burl but just thought he didn't so I let it go. I posted this on Dec 23, 2016.
That's too bad. Maybe he had good intentions, but 4 years... I owe my brother a copper weather vane for his wood shed. It is half done, but we put our house on the market 2 years ago, and the project got put on hold. I should get back to it but I haven't set up shop here really yet.
It's been a few days since I called and left a message without any call back from him so I don't expect anything from that Burl I brought him.
They called back explaining that with permission they had picked up a Cherry Burl from a tree near the road near my SIL place and that he still had ours and would do it. He called tonight and brought it down, while having coffee he explained this was is first bowl ever. He wouldn't take anything for it so I'll make sure that I get him a few more Burls for anything he wants to make for friends or family.
