Well this turned out pretty good. Tree service that dumps free wood outside it's yard. The keep the prime hardwood to sell to people in the city and dump the rest. This pile consisted of silver maple, manitoba maple and some sort of spruce. I took some silver maple. Not the best stuff but it's free and i like it for the firepit. And the building in the background...it's a brewery. Bonus!!!
I'd go back and get as much as you can. Silver maple is good stuff. Especially when a lot of the hard work is already done. I've never heard of Manitoba maple, but I'd grab all of that too. Anything maple is worth grabbing and burning inside.
papadave...i don't heat with wood. only have a fire pit. just have the addiction to collect the stuff. eventually I'll move to the country and heat with wood. yooperwood...unfortunately the brewery was closed horkn....i like the silver too. but as a city tree, it does get nice and twisty so can be a bit of a pain to split. so i only took smaller rounds and branches. and manitoba maple is "acer negundo" as the scientific name. i guess it also goes by box elder. i've always known it as manitoba maple. never burned, but i was focusing on the silver species. bogydave...yeah, i'll go again. trying to get a buddy to join me...and/or someone who can actually use the stuff. surprisingly, most people in toronto I've pitched this idea to (i.e. scrounging) would rather pay $150 per face cord. actually i've shown this pic to a few friends, and women want some of those bigger rounds to make coffee tables and stuff like that.
