We moved into our new to us 1899 large Victorian home last march. In the basement man cave there is a 1003C installed, that has been in regular use since 1997 ish. It looks great and due to the way the PO installed it with the forces air furnace cold air return pulling from above it, we are able to move the heat around the 3000+sq ft (two upper floors) fairly well. That said, very early on I was encouraged to consider a more modern stove that would be more Efficient. Thinking of doing just that. But a couple concerns/needs. The oak comes in thru the bottom of the earthstove and I'm not really willing to change that. Can a NC-30 work in that way ? What about a princess?(realizing that's more money). I love my 30. I am not sure if I understand what you are asking exactly, but here is the OAK hookup for the 30 (the lower hole.) If you put it on legs (included with the stove), the pedestal will not be under it. You could also run it without the OAK.
Yeah after I re-read my post, I didn't really say what I was after.... mostly I'm wondering if it'd be worth the cost to switch. Meaning will I burn that much less wood? Until yesterday, the last weeks been real cold for us. The weekend was -16 nights and low single digits daytime temps. Since I was home, I'd add a load in the morning(7ish), a load around 2, 6, and 11pm. 350-400 In the morning with Great coals for a quick start in the morning. As far as the oak, this old earthstove has a bottom facing inlet for the oak (or at least appears so). The tube goes from outside, and is hid in the wall, drops down to floor grade and then loops back up in the raised hearth into the stove. Not sure I like the idea of redoing the hearth so would need a similar hookup for oak. I haven't moved this stove so I'm not sure how it's actually done. Maybe I could move the stove forward on the hearth and use a short tube to connect from floor to stove rear if I made a change ? Thanks for the picture! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Is the back of the Earthstove's pedestal open? If it is you could use a hand held mirror (w/ a flashlight, too) to peak under there?
As long as the catalyst in your stove is working properly your not going to gain efficiency by going to the Englander.

The the 30 will do the trick. You can also look at the drolet stoves. One of them might be easier to hook up with your existing oak? Grizzly Adam and oldspark what say you? The Woodstock IS might be another option as well.
Probably not worth spending the money fixing it since its been ran all this time without one. You could check and see if everything is still in good shape. If so shop around. Here is one. My friend that we bought the house from had done all this in the last 4 years. He has the logs milled at a local part time sawmill. The walls are Sheetrock and then he mixed mud with a lil silica sand and rolled /troweled it on to look like chink between the "logs". All the built-ins and doors have had the same wood or Wyoming blue pine(of some sort, he couldn't recall) added so it all feels like a cabin. Kinda neat when people have a look around the house and discover a room that doesn't quite fit, but it's loved by all that visit! If you're going to replace that stove, put in the biggest stove you can afford. Anything under 3.0cu.ft and you'll be disappointed. I have a 3.1cu.ft stove in my basement and wouldn't trust it to get my entire house up to where we like it (70+).
If you're thinking about picking up a 30, why not wait until this spring? Home Depot usually offers them at one store or another for an insanely discounted price. You just order on line, use the store number of the store that offers the stove at the discount price and save a couple hundred $$
Me too, one of the best buys on the market, have no idea how it compares to the 30 but it seems like most owners of both stoves are very happy with the purchase.
