It's 20 out heading to -3 or -13 depending on who you believe, the liberty was loaded up over an hour ago with some smaller splits of maple and cherry. It's 77 in the basement and 72 up here.
Packers pulled it off!! No, I use an IR pyrometer. With my insert, there's no place to use a magnetic meter on the pipe. The fan blows across the top of the stove, so my STT is just under the actual top. It's all good, I was outside doing some clean up shovelling of snow and it's simply heat ripples from the chimney. High btu wood packed full in my stove is a mega heater. The furnace still didn't kick in yet. I actually had to turn the HVAC fan on to spread the heat around.
It's a great idea using the HVAC fan from the furnace. It spreads the stove room air around the house, even in the basement. Prior to turning the fan on , you could see your breath in the spare BR when I went to get my Packers jersey right before noon. We keep that rooms door closed as we don't need to heat it. It's pretty much just my closet room with a spare bed. Yes, it uses a little electricity, but it doesn't use natural gas to get unused rooms, including the basement to a warmer temp. I can't see opening a window, although I do open the patio door to let the dogs out.
25º out and 73º in.....have a load of cherry and aspen burning for the evening load. Heading toward 10º tonight, have some white oak, locust and ash in by the stove for tonight.
See where you're pulling fresh air from. I mention this because I did a little maint. on my "hardly ever, ever used" propane furnace recently. Found out, my "fresh air" was being pulled from ducting being filtered by the carpet in the dining room. The same carpet that was replaced by laminate flooring 3-4 years ago. I never knew this. So, I took a hole saw to the crawlspace door and punched a bunch of holes so it draws air from the bonus room. The air draw was enough that it would extinguish a lighter when held too close to one of the door holes. Go figure. More work to do but I have at least identified this issue. 1950's HVAC, what do you do?
Woke up yesterday 530AM at 21F with snow coming down totaled to 4-6" temps rose to near 40F by afternoon and started light rain got called in to work around 6PM worked all night out in it and by 10PM pouring freezing rain and heavy fog around 36F. From 2AM on started to drop temperature while still freezing raining ended up getting home around 6AM at 25F. Proceeded to hug the stove the house was at 70F thanks to the Mrs. so I jammed it full of ash and slept til 11AM woke up to frozen everything two inches solid ice in the driveway and it was 22F blowing 20mph and snowing pretty good. It's currently breezy on and off snowing 18F out and 71F in we are watching the Christmas Card on tv about a family that owns a sawmill so I guess it's ok to watch
Mine pulls the air from all of the rooms, including the basement. I open a few vents on the basement ducts and lots of hot air from upstairs blows out of those vents. It seems to work well enough.
Almost down to zero here now. Going below overnight. Burning medium size Ash splits, a decent size split of Oak, and a few small Elm splits.
Minus 11 without the wind chill factored in. Burning red oak, mulberry, and a little hackberry. Expect minus 16 later. Wind chill minus 25. Got an early Christmas present; a down glacier guide parka from Mountain Hardware. Perfect for the weather. Enjoying watching the snow flakes drop down on my FHC page. Nice touch. Is Grizzly Adams the genius behind all the programming? Winter is a wonderful season!
After 12 or 13 days I think, the weather has finally broke. Warmed up to -7 C (19 F) this evening. I lost the cold weather turbo charged draft, but that's okay. Stove is nibbling on small splits of poplar.
We'll have negative 6 overnight. After the 7" snow yesterday, the freezing rain today, everything froze rock solid. Burning ash birch and maple tonight.
Thanks NH mountain man. 33 and warm? Lol that's about 10 degrees away from calling in the National Guard here. Yeah we love our outdoor burning. Most of the time it's a variety of different types of oak every now and then we throw some fat liter in to get it going good. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk
-7 F now, real feel -23 with the wind chill. Staying warm with all beech right now. 68 and slowly rising inside, well away from the stove room. In the stove room it's in the 70's.
