Yesterday my son and I hit the National Forest to cut a couple of loads. Having him there makes the whole experience easier and more enjoyable. Here is the first tree, blown over about 10 paces from the road. And here's the same tree 30 minutes later. Here's the truck loaded And a poor attempt at a father son selfie Second load doesn't have as many pics because my son wasn't with me and I was rushing to get done before dark. Here is the truck loaded And selfie pic as I was losing daylight. Good day in the woods!
red oak those are some great pictures. Indeed, father and son working together is the tops!!!!! Cherish those times; they will leave home only too quickly. Geeze, my youngest son, who it seems like only a couple years ago we were working together, celebrated his 52nd birthday a couple days ago. Dang, the time moves along so swiftly. But how on earth do you manage with no snow on the ground? Here, although it looks pretty with the snow and we have been rather cold (like January weather), it would be nicer had the snow waited about a month before coming. But I do hope to get busy in the woods again this coming week. The nice part is that it is supposed to start warming up by Tuesday or Wednesday with Wednesday being 32 degrees. That will feel like spring! Tuesday is supposed to be in the high 20's but windy so that won't be too great and the wind will determine rather or not I work in the woods. Thanks for the pictures and you will appreaciate that wood. Looks like part was a bit hollow. Should still be great firewood.
Yes Backwoods, I am all too aware of how fast time goes with the kids. It seems like just yesterday I was bringing him home from the hospital! It's funny to hear how different our climates are. We hardly ever get snow until January, and for us 32 degrees is a pretty cold winter day, although we had a few days recently where we didn't get above 20. Yesterday as I was cutting it was in the 50s, T-shirt and jeans were enough for me to be pretty warm. The second tree did have some hollow pieces. Part of it blew over and I cut down the trunk, about 10 feet tall. Did not realize the trunk was hollow until it fell. Split those pieces so they wouldn't take up much room in the truck. Some of the pieces have a bit of rot in the middle which is why I want to split it as soon as possible, hopefully today, and get it off the ground.
Oh wow! 50 degrees at this time of the year is fantastic but then, the next cold snap will make you suffer a bit.
Great memories with you and your son being created in the out of doors. Treasure them. And, nice score on the wood.
18 truck loads on a permit for $20. It would be 12 loads if I had a full size truck. Has to be dead or down. Usually I can find something pretty close to the road that is not that hard to get.
I have four sons, all in college and beyond now. ENjoy very load of firewood you can with your son! I know my boys learned a lot from it, and sometimes when they visit it is them asking me if we are going to cut some wood.
Can't get much better than that, Dad! My first daughter is 15 now and though the moments like these are fewer and farther between, I know she will treasure them like I do as she grows into a fine young woman. -edit- also gotta show love for the Celtics hat!
I spent $20 last year for a fuel wood permit (PA state forest land) which entitled me to 2 full size truck loads- AKA 1 cord to the state. Much better deal where you are
