I thought I would start a thread dedicated to the birds at the bird feeder. We have had mention of it in other threads but they are hard to find after a few days.
I'll start this one off with a clip of someone who came up with an idea to keep the squirrels out of their bird feeder.

Larry, that would be fun to watch for sure.

A rifle can work wonders too.

Our biggest problem here is hawks and occasionally a wandering cat.

That squirrel will probably figure out a way to defeat that spring.

I am not getting squirrels for some odd reason. The gray ones used to be horrid, but now none. The reds and the chippies my son pops off with a bb gun. I don't shoot anything anymore. Would if I really had to but prefer not to. I do set rodent traps.
I am amazed at the variety of woodpeckers I get at the suet feeder. I have my bird book. Need to find the little pecker head that doesn't have any red. Funny how they all look at the cats in the window and just ignore them.
I'm hoping to get a couple tossed out Christmas tree so I can stick them in the snow near the bird feeders.

There sure seems to be a lot of squabbling at my feeder this year. More than Ive ever seen.
Last year I had birds very early when I set up feeder and they disappeared til about Jan or so.
This year I put the feeder up and have had many birds right from the start.
The other day I had a Junco that was going at some stale crackers I had placed out like a starved hog! Comical to watch.

Just started reloading mine after the skunks have stopped showing up to eat the spill from the feeder. Lots of chickadees and titmouse so far. Could swear I had a house wren the other day hanging around, but they should have gone south this late in the season. Might have to put out mealworms for them.

Maybe the Carolina Wren? Does it have white bars overy the eyes? They are a little lighter in color and larger. They showed up here too.

I'll add some pics to. I'm almost through 25lbs of black oil sunflower seeds already.

Yes it did. The tail was a giveaway, then I noticed the white bars. It was chubbier than the little house wren that nested in one of our birdhouses. I'm going to check my book to see which wren it was.

I need to see if Mama Bear took any pics. One day while I was at work she described a big hawky lookin thing that showed up for a couple hours near the feeders. I think it was a prairie falcon lookin for a snack. She said no birds in the yard while he sat there just surveying.

Jon, you should see our bill. We just picked up another 250 lbs this morning. And this does not include what the deer eat... Wild animals are our friends. At least, most of them.

:bug: I didn't realize you put that much out. We barely use 25lbs a year, but we have a lot of juncos and cardinals now.
