So a coworkers husband is wanting to buy a log splitter and has offered to trade me 5 cord of oak for a Huskie 22 ton splitter if I make the trade I would be 4-5 years ahead. And could purchase another splitter anytime I find a great buy or just buy my wood as I can get oak for 125-150 cord anytime I want and my primary location for wood is about 45 miles away.

Depends on the condition of your splitter. If it is clapped out, it sounds like a good deal for you. If it is like new, you might want another cord.

I'd go for it. If you only burn around one cord a year is it even worth it to have a splitter?

I'm burning ~3 cord per year, already have at least 2 years CSS and working on 3rd year now this trade would take me to 4-5 years ahead.

Splitter is like new but it's easily replaced.

I'd argue for 6 cords of oak. 5 cords at 125 a cord is 625. You can't buy a splitter like that for that kind of money. Not even used.

If they argue saying that the splitter isn't new, then say that the wood is even older than the splitter.;)

Have you owned it since new? If so, you know it's maintenance history. If you end up buying an used one down the road you never know what you are in for.

Or were you looking to upgrade anyway? Then it may make sense to trade. If it was serving its purpose it will serve you for a lifetime I would think. Tough decision in my book, but then again I like to process wood and wouldn't give up a tool and a hobby that keeps me in shape.

Sorry, no deal, final answer. I'd keep the splitter, especially if it's in decent shape, and especially if I'm going to burn wood for years to come. Now, if you're not going to do the labor to cut and split, then yeah, make the trade, and buy wood down the road. But me, I'm a burnin' fool, and I'm keeping my splitter for a while yet.

For me to buy 5 cord (assuming it's c/s) would be nearly $1200....

Her husband had a heart attack (minor) about 2 months ago and refuses to go to a gym but is willing to buy a splitter so he can get some exercise and make some extra cash on the side. I'm not wanting to sell it but to help him out I'll do it with the agreement I can buy it back if he decides to sell it.

I'm also kinda (okay very impressed) with the kinetic splitters and would not mind having one of them!

Well, that adds a wrinkle to the deal.

Go with your gut. If it means helping a friend out, and possibly getting the splitter back eventually, then yes, do it. ( But go for that 6th cord;) )

Sounds like you have your mind made up. And also have a game plan for the future. Go for it if it's right for you.

I once traded away a tractor for 12 cords of wood. I tried selling it for months with no luck. The only offer I had was for $800 and I turned it down. Finally someone offered some firewood and we agreed on 12 cords. It was also a bit of kismet. We had just bought our property with a woodstove but had no firewood.

While I miss having the cool, 1950's Case tractor, it didn't run well and had some issues. I was always afraid it would quit running or never start again while I was trying to sell it. It didn't even have a loader or a 3 point and I had another tractor that was far more useful.

$125 for a cord of Oak is really cheap! I wouldn't drive 45 miles if I could buy Oak for that price.

and the person you sold it to for the wood was equally satisfied I'm sure.

Let's see. 5 x $125=$625. Can you ever find a 22 ton for that price?

I say trade it to your friend. He gets some exercise, you get new splitter in a few years.

Or your friend's widow gives you the splitter back as a thank you for finishing him off with another heart attack!

    :D
