I'm thinking you may be correct. I zoomed in on the image, and, from what I can tell, there is a terminal leaf, which would negate walnut. Number of leaves, reddish-brown twigs and smooth, greyish bark (maybe why he thinks it's a maple) seem spot on. If it is indeed a Tree of Paradise, is it good firewood? I've never heard of it. Is it worth 1.5 hours total drive time for four, 3' x 3' rounds? Thanks. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
No. "Tree of Heaven" aka Chinese / "Stinking sumac" - so called I think because it "stinks to high heaven". Nasty awful rotten stuff that. But that's not what it is. Walnut does indeed have a terminal leaflet as shown in Ralphie Boy 's pic. Probably the reason it got cut down is because it died just like the rest of the English Walnut around here have in the last 3 years. Theyre native to Central Asia (aka Persian Walnut) and I think the "polar vortex" did them in. You'd know for certain which one it is the moment you arrive. If it smells worse than a dairy farm it's stinking sumac. If the rounds have a dark colored heartwood its walnut.
Well, I guess either way I should focus my efforts elsewhere. Here is a pic he sent, not the best, but I think it shows the heartwood isn't dark. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I have an English walnut as a yard tree. It is only considered a hard wood because it drops its leaves in winter, not because it is a dense wood. I think I would rather a nice pine over this thing as firewood. I would not go 5 miles for a free one as firewood but I like it as a nut tree.
That's not as bad as Buffalo during the "polar vortex" though. I saw a couch listed on CL under "Free Firewood". Not kidding...
Walnut isn't a bad firewood, usually splits easy ..I wouldn't drive 35 MILES for any yard clean up unless it paid cash money..
