Good morning. I have seen some posts where people mention using small fans on the floor to circulate warm air into cooler rooms. Does anyone have s pic or link to a model that they have had success with? Thanks
Actually I just use a small circular fan... but you have better results with blowing the cold air into the warm air. Backwoods Savage .... taught me that many moons ago... and I still argue with my better about that... it simply works...
We have one of the small Vornado fans. I think blades are only 3" or so but it is enough to move air in a situation like this. You can use a larger fan but you might feel some drafts and that is why we usually say get a small desktop fan and set it on the floor. And thank you Chvymn99
I agree with the others here, any old small cheapo fan will work. We use the kind that are fan/heat low/heat high kind of thing and only run the fan. Use a cigarette or toilet paper or incense to watch how a fan changes air movement. And yes, blow cold air towards the warm area.
I do the same thing. We have a small desk style fan that sits in the doorway of the stove room blowing cold air into the room. It does a good job of keeping the warm air moving around.
I was able to get a small Honeywell desk fan from staples for $16. I will try it out and experiment to see what works best for my house's layout which isn't too open.
This is one like I use as it can set on the floor in our narrow hallway on one side and doesn't take up much room.
My stove room has two door ways and is a sunken living room that has two steps. Both doorways have bulkheads that extend down about 18" from the ceiling. In my first attempt I didn't notice much air movement with the fan. I had it sitting on the floor about 12' from the stove room. I suspect the bulkheads are trapping the hot air and acting like a damm
I am a "fan" of the small vornado as well, its in our unheated bedroom, very quiet! (fan pun intentional )
I have to clear only a single 18" or 20" Bulk head but then it will actually heat up both bedroom to the right and left of the fan (think like H letter where the fan is in the middle section blowing towards the long leg, Plus in the middle of that section I can put a lot of heat up stairs to the top bedroom). It wont happen right away, it takes a bit for it to work out.
I need to get a slighlty larger fan and have it pointed down the stairs to try and get warm air up there.
Best way to experiment with how different fan positions work is to tape a 6 to 8 inch piece of toilet paper at the top of your doorways and let it hang down. It will move with the air.
I'll vouch for the fan trick too thanks to mr Backwoods Savage! We have a 20" box fan that runs in our room at the back of the house I just stick it aiming out of the door and it helps pull the heat to the back. This year I'm going to try and combine that with a small fan the same one that chevyman posted sitting in the hallway by the stove room and see if we can get more heat back there.
Just tossing this out there as an idea (has worked for me). We have a cold air return vent in our stove room. After talking to our heating and AC guy this summer (had to have a new system installed) he suggested going straight above our current return air vent and cutting one in at the ceiling. This has made a tremendous difference in our home "temp balance". This does require you to run your fan all the time but we do that anyway. It keeps air moving in the house. On the other hand my dad has added pass through fans above doorways. Similar to the old "school house" door ways. He cut a pass through at the ceiling and has a fan that can be controlled inside the wall. Anyway just a couple of different options. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
