I've been thinking about putting one on my 1401 as I feel it will be more efficient not sucking the air through my front door, which is pretty drafty. I found a kit for 100.00 which seems expensive, however it only lists free standing stove models, is there a place to add one on an insert? Here's the link: Outside Air Kit for Napoleon Gas and Woodstoves. 111KT It's 2" flex pipe with insulation, 2 band clamps and a cover for outside wall. I have no experience using or installing one of these but it seems like I could source parts way cheaper. From what I understand there's a punch out on the Napoleon you hook this up to and then just route it outside, no? Please, any info, warnings, or advice would be appreciated.
You could make your own, that's what I did for both my stoves. Make sure you use non-flammable material. 3" metal pipe, elbows, and I used a metal dryer vent for the intake. I left the flap on it and hold it open in the winter with a magnet. It gets closed in the summer so no rodents can get in.
Did you insulate it at all? I don't see why you would need to but it's included in the kit. Maybe it would freeze and thaw, leaving lots of condensation inside? Is there a max length it should be?
When I did mine, (similar to what Scotty did, maybe $20 or so), the flex pipe had frost on it. It dripped when temps rose some. I bought a box of Armaflex (insulation) and wrapped it. No more frost or drips. I also foamed all around the pipe going through the wall. Gotta' remember, it's pulling frigid air from outside through the pipe, so any warm inside air might condense and frost on the pipe. Some have said they had no issue with that.............
Iv'e seen a video where it was newer construction and he insulated it just behind the stove in the wall before he closed it up for condensation build up
