Got out this afternoon and dropped a standing dead lodgepole pine. Ill c,s,s this and use it in April although I did need to reload when I got home so threw a bunch in the stove. I wont be able to get out much now until spring due to the deepening snow. It was -14c/7f but I was still working up a bit of a sweat. Felt good to run the saw again. Even though it had a lean away from my preferred landing spot I was able to drop it where I wanted it to go. all limbed, chalked and ready for bucking. Needed a stump to put the saw on so I could take this picture. I had to toss it down twice out of the bush until I could get it on the road and then just backed the truck up to each pile. Not a big load but it was five minutes from my house and I had fun getting out.
Nice work! So, a two chuck to the truck haul, huh? It's about to go from no snow, to a bit, then maybe a lot in a week for me. I'll still cut and haul in the snow though, my setup with my atv works pretty well in the snow.

Typically the standing dead pines I drop are under 15% mc but it being cold and unsplit Im not sure if this one is stove ready yet. I threw some of the smaller rounds from the top of the tree in the stove already and they burned fine so we will see about the bigger ones. Where I took it from is in a bit of a shaded area with tight trees around it so we will see. Ill split it and top cover it and likely use it in early spring if its ready. Going by weight alone Id say its good.
Hi Nordic Splitter. When its stacked nice and stacked above the side rails I get about half a cord. When its thrown in loose like that probably half that or a bit more. Normally when Im out I like to stack it so I can gauge how much I got but I wasnt feeling like doing that yesterday. I might measure it once I unload it and stack it.
Yeah it was just nice to get out. Not a big haul but when its that close to home the pressure is off to go big.
I took a good sized round and warmed it up in front of the stove for the afternoon and just now split it and checked it with my mm. Kind of hard to read but 16.6% works for me. My garage wood needs replenishing so I think I'll split it all up and load it in there to use right away.
Sweet. I've done the deal of tossing rounds out of the brush to get it to the road. In the right place it's not bad. We're not allowed to cut standing trees in the areas I cut. Even if standing dead was allowed, idiots would ruin it by cutting down anything they want. Then someone would get hurt dropping a tree and file a lawsuit.
Ive heard the same thing from campinspecter who lives out west. Its pretty common here in the kootenay district to cut down standing dead trees but it cant be one that is used for habitat or within 150 ft of water. I haven't heard of to many issues with people dying from falling trees. Ive seen a few idiots who see a winter larch and thinks because it doesn't have needles it must be dead .
