I wear ppe, that was a friend of mine. Would hate to see something bad happen but also not gonna harp on the guy. He worked for years cutting timber for building lots, always seems to amaze me the people who do this stuff for a living usually are the most lax about that stuff, complacency I guess.
It's what he had in the fridge. I did just finish up a couple Great Lakes Christmas ales though, deeelicious!
Been there, it's not fun. Mostly when I'm low on wood and there don't seem to be any easy pickings around, time to head down the ol' swamp and get me some wood! This was about as easy as they come, dry, open, tractor and burn pile 40' away to get rid of the brush. Don't get much better!
Everything is split!!! Just gotta find someone with a bigger trailer or maybe a dump trailer. Only about 2.5 miles from my house but it would probably take quite a few trips with my truck. Not sure how much this is, I'm guessing around 2 cord. Three separate piles.
Yeah, I hear you. The thing is that chips flying towards your eyes or the chain doesn't care where it is going, or how many years you've been lucky by not being injured. The last time I was out cutting a downed elm, there was a crazy strong wind and it threw wood chips in my eyes. That was a rarity that i didn't at least have some sort of eye protection on. Luckily I got the chips out quickly and was able to continue.
My grandfather made it home from WW2 in one piece to lose an eye busting up some stone for the foundation of his house-after seeing him take his glass eye out you can believe I always protect my eyes!
Got one truckload home today. I would imagine there's about 12 loads in my truck, just tossed in loosely. 6' bed on a tacoma so it's a little shallower than a full size, how much you think just tossed in?I'll keep you guys updated on the load count! Got it all stacked after spending a couple hours on stack maintenance, moving stuff around and bringing some more up to the house. I want a proper woodshed so bad, one day!
Nice looking stuff! Cherry? ought to make up some removable sides for your truck I did last year and just wished I had sooner
Wish i had a big cherry like that. Id throw that sucker on the mill for sure. Looks like a good time. Lots of wood there too.
All these people wanting to see it milled instead of chunked up yet I have no mill. Who wants to come to NY and mill the next one for me? I think I may buy myself the granberg setup at some point here. Would a 372 be a sufficient saw to mill with once I got the proper bar/chain?
Your probably the closest that I know of, plus the biggest milling enthusiast that I can see. Is 372 a capable saw for some light duty milling? I've been wanting to get into it for a while, mostly when I get a nice straight tree that I gotta chunk up for firewood. Probably never get to your level but can't say for sure. Would be real nice to have some wood of my own to make things with. I made my mantle out of some oak that my father in law cut out of his woods in 1976, so cool to have a story to go along with a project.
I've used an MS460 in a pinch on some red pine logs, but I generally prefer 90cc and up. Milling is a pretty "heavy duty" job for a chainsaw, and I think you could probably burn up a 70cc pretty quick if you were doing a lot of it. It would probably be a good place to start though, and then if you do get into it more or get your hands on some bigger trees, maybe make the step up to something bigger then. I'm serious on the offer - shoot me a PM if you do decide you want help milling it.
Appreciate that. Just might be the kick I need to get milling, plus to learn some tips would be great. We'll see when I can get some more trees dropped. The neighbor of my buddy who was going to let me cut on his property has gotten pretty sick and doesn't have long from what my buddy told me, we'll see what happens
Went and grabbed 2 more loads today. Load count:3. Probably have around 6-8 more loads in my truck. Got it all unloaded and stacked. The pallets 12' long and I'm going 4' high, almost full! Enough for today, off for dinner and to see "a Christmas story" broadway production.
