That's a good question Fox, most of the oak this year has been red so I would say I like the hickory just a smidge better. I have a big pile of white oak for next year and it, I believe is a nose above the other 2. All the higher end hardwoods seem pretty close and the wind and weather make so many variables on burn that I do not really notice much from one to the other. Now my locust...I do notice a difference there.
I wish I could say more but due to circumstances beyond my control, I will not be bringing home any more wood from this location. I'll be walking away from 2-3 more truck loads plus what is still standing. Sorry for the bummer post but I hate to leave everybody hanging.
Had a few go bad too. The good side is you got some good stuff home . More than you had. & some darn good BTU wood too. Bummer though, it was a real good one
It's actually a personal decision on my part. I doubt the wood will get used, perhaps someone else will pick up what I've already cut. But I will not be returning to the property.
Not sure what your circumstances are, but I've had a few like that. People were either ungrateful, unreasonable, or both. Plenty of other places to get wood without having to put up with BS.
I had one that after I was almost done, they thought I should pay them some $$ for the wood. I had the area cleaned up , the brush stacked. Truck with the last load. Told them I just saved them several hundred, figured they would at least pay me for my fuel. He huffed , I just held his glare & we ended up calling it even. Some land owners think each tree is worth $500, good thing the tax guy don't. Cutting in the state cutting area, the residents are much nicer & easier to deal with, the moose. LOL .
MM, been there done that. Too bad. Glad you got what you did. That is some good stuff! For 40 years, I have gone from one place to the other cutting wood. Some years I have more than I can cut and the next year NOTHING! I got a new place, gold mine I thought, last year and knowing the guy, thought I had a place to cut all I could possibly burn. He up and sold the place.....gone! So, as it has gone for 40 years, I keep searching. I have never been without wood, but some years have been really slime.
I'm not short on wood to cut by any means. Just jumped on this job for all of the locust. It sucks that I had to leave a couple loads of cut rounds behind but it would be near impossible to convince me to step foot on the property again.
MM, I hate to hear that, and I understand you can't go into details, so, as a rookie hoarder, what should I expect when removing trees from someones property? I've got a load coming up, what kind of things should I discuss with LO? BTW, are you a career mech, what do you work on? I turn wrences for the FD, trucks & engines, and then cars at home.
